Contact was steady, if irregular, between the SWP and the British Trotskyists, with the result that the Americans exerted what influence they had to encourage the Workers ' International League into the International through a fusion with the Revolutionary Socialist League, a union that had been requested by the Emergency Conference.

In the wake of the World Congress, the line of the International Leadership was generally accepted by groups around the world, including the U. S. SWP whose leader, James P. Cannon, corresponded with the French majority to support the tactic of entrism sui generis.

This was a public faction which initially included, in addition to the SWP, Gerry Healy's British section The Club, the Internationalist Communist Party in France ( then led by Lambert who had expelled Bleibtreu and his grouping ), Nahuel Moreno's party in Argentina and the Austrian and Chinese sections of the FI.

In the early 1940s he worked in a foundry in Bayonne, New Jersey where he was an organizer and shop steward for the United Electrical Workers as well as a recruiter for the SWP.

The name of the paper was the same as the American American SWP publication The Militant, and as a result " most of the pioneers of Militant were not enthralled by the choice of the name " writes Taaffe.

In 1964 he began an association with an SWP faction called the Revolutionary Tendency, a faction which was later expelled from the SWP, and came under the influence of British Trotskyist leader Gerry Healy.

The opposition faction alleged that Cannon's leadership of the SWP was " bureaucratic conservative " and demanded the right to its own publications to express its views outside the party.

The majority faction said this was contrary to Lenin's concept of democratic centralism, and that disagreements and the SWP should be debated only internally.

The SWP was active in supporting those labor strikes that occurred despite the wartime " no-strike pledge ", and in supporting protests against racist discrimination during the war, such as A. Philip Randolph's March on Washington Movement.

By 1951, their presence in the SWP was ever more anomalous and most left to form the Correspondence Publishing Committee.

The next, smaller split was that of Sam Marcy's Global Class War faction, which called within the SWP for support of Henry Wallace's Progressive Party Presidential run in 1948 and regarded Mao Zedong as a revolutionary leader.

The result was a small accretion of youth to the party's ranks and in the same period long time SWP leader Murry Weiss won another group of youth from the Shachtmanites as they joined the Socialist Party of America.

The most important faction opposing the SWP leadership's new line was the Revolutionary Tendency ( RT ) led by James Robertson and Tim Wohlforth that rejected the SWP's " capitulation " to Pabloism and opposed joining the USFI.

Halstead was the 1968 Presidential candidate of the SWP who visited Vietnam in that capacity.

The SWP was also increasingly outspoken in its defense of the Cuban government of Fidel Castro and its identification with that government.

The international tensions developed further when the Leninist Trotskyist Tendency was established in 1973 by the SWP and its co-thinkers in order to contribute to the debate for the Tenth World Congress.

A further factor in the growing divisions within the SWP was the move by Jack Barnes, Mary-Alice Waters and others in the leadership away from the Trotskyist label.

The opposition factions continued to support the theory of permanent revolution, and the Trotskyist label: they anticipated that the SWP leadership was reassessing its place in the Fourth International.

This was the most recent split or major faction fight in the SWP ; the organization has experienced an unusually long period of internal peace since, although it has declined steadily in both its membership numbers and its political influence within the U. S. left.

The SWP's most high profile and controversial campaign in the late 1980s and early 1990s was its Mark Curtis Defense Committee, established after Curtis, an SWP activist and trade union organizer, was charged and convicted on burglary and rape charges in 1988.

He argued that the SWP had more in common with these organizations than with many groups calling themselves Trotskyist.

In its first period, 1977 – 1982, the Anti-Nazi League was supposedly run by an elected committee nationally and similar committees throughout the country, although in practice many local and National ANL initiatives were launched directly by the SWP.

This was immediately opposed by the Revolutionary Tendency of the SWP, and by the SLL in Britain and the PCI in France, as well as many orthodox Trotskyists throughout the world.

The ICFI came to Gelfand's aid and, in the course of the trial, made many claims about US government infiltration into the SWP as part of CoIntelPro and earlier.

While the SWP and DSP recruited many activists from the radical student movement of the 1970s and from various social movements since, it failed to retain most of them for long as the sixties and seventies radicalisation wave has receded.

Barnes was one of a group of members, many of whom also attended Carleton College or other universities, who joined the SWP shortly after the Cuban Revolution.

The themes of many SWP games were ( and still are ) based on popular TV quiz shows, board games or other aspects of popular culture.

The 1940 split in the SWP followed an internal factional debate over the party's internal government, the class nature of the Russian state, and Marxist philosophy, among other questions.

Like this debate, most later factional disputes within the SWP also centered on different attitudes towards revolutions in other countries.

This faction ended up leaving the SWP in 1958 after supporting the suppression of the Hungarian Rising of 1956, a position contrary to that held by the SWP and other Trotskyist tendencies.

Cannon and other SWP leaders such as Joseph Hansen saw Cuba as qualitatively different from the " Stalinist " states of Eastern Europe.

After his assassination, the SWP had limited success in forming alliances with his followers and other Black nationalists.

In 2003, the SWP, supported by the ISG, led the SA into an alliance with George Galloway and other figures involved in the Stop the War Coalition to form the Respect Coalition.

Shachtman came into closer contact with other left-wing intellectuals in or around the SWP, including James Burnham, Dwight Macdonald and the group around Partisan Review.

Internationally they gave up their identification with the Fourth International after a failed attempt in 1947-48 to reunify with the SWP, and aligned with the left wings of the British Labour Party, other European social democratic parties, and nationalist forces like the Indian National Congress party in colonial and ex-colonial countries.

Both sides claimed that the other had no factual detail to support its charges: The ICFI argues that the defense of the SWP leadership, and the charge that the ICFI's campaign was a ' frame up ,' are slanders against Workers ' League without factual backing.

Furthermore, they argue that the Spartacists, while developing a correct position that the SWP were centrist, did not recognise that the Fourth International had degenerated before it split, and therefore were more critical of one section than of the other.

By 1961 the ICFI had split politically, the Internationalist Communist Party ( PCI ) in France and the Socialist Labour League ( SLL ) in Britain arguing that a workers ' state had not been created in Cuba, putting them at odds with the American SWP and the other organisations in the ICFI.

In the 1970s they issued a report titled " Security and the Fourth International " which alleged, amongst other things, that leading SWP member Joseph Hansen, who had been an assistant to Leon Trotsky during his Mexico City exile, was an accomplice in his assassination alleging that he and, by implication the SWP, were agents of the Soviet secret police ( GPU ).

The SWP's Seattle branch, with support from individuals in other cities, split off from the SWP over what it described as the SWP ’ s entrenched opportunism and undemocratic methods.

Trotsky was killed by one of Stalin's NKVD agents and the CPUSA supported the US government's prosecution of Cannon and other American Trotskyites under the Smith Act, the interests of a war preparing US government and the largely Soviet-controlled pro-war CPUSA having combined as Cannon's SWP was aiming to mobilize the working class against the war.

Some members of Combat Communiste were won over to the positions of the International Socialists ( UK ) ( as the SWP was then called ) and sought to win other militants to their views before launching an independent group of their own.

For opposing World War II, he and other leaders of the SWP and the Minneapolis Teamsters were convicted of violating the Smith Act which made it illegal to " conspire to advocate the violent overthrow of the US Government.
