The Scooby Gang, or " Scoobies ", are a group of characters in the cult television series and comic book Buffy the Vampire Slayer who battle the supernatural forces of evil.

The group was first referred to as the Scooby Gang by Xander in the Season Two episode " What's My Line, Part One " as a reference to the group of ghost-hunting teenagers from the cartoon Scooby-Doo.

She is the focal point of the Scooby Gang, as the team initially formed around her responsibilities as the Chosen One, and she is very close to most of its members.

* Rupert Giles — As Buffy's Watcher, and a father-figure and mentor to the entire group, Giles is a founding figure of the Scooby Gang, although his British upbringing resists the lighthearted nickname at first.

* Willow Rosenberg — Willow's abilities as a witch make her one of the most powerful members of the Scooby Gang.

In Season Two, Cordelia becomes Xander's girlfriend and an official member of the Scooby Gang until she leaves for Los Angeles and joins Angel Investigations.

Although she works with the Scooby Gang and even starts to accept Giles ' authority, she never really integrates with them.

Dawn suffers from abandonment issues due to both her mother and Buffy having died in the same year she entered Buffy's life ; she considers the Scooby Gang to be her surrogate family and is very close to them.

Along with variations in the team roster, the place which serves as a sort of " headquarters " for the Scooby Gang has also changed a few times over the series.

Willow plays an integral role within the inner circle of friends — called the Scooby Gang — who support Buffy Summers, a teenager gifted with superhuman powers to defeat vampires, demons, and other evil in the fictional town of Sunnydale.

Willow was noted to be the spirit of the Scooby Gang, and Hannigan attributed Willow's popularity with viewers ( she had by May 1998 seven websites devoted to her ) to being an underdog who develops confidence and is accepted by Buffy, a strong, popular person in school.

No longer the conscience of the Scooby Gang, Willow cedes this role to Tara then revels in breaking more rules.

Scholar Farah Mendlesohn asserts that Willow's realization that she is in love with Tara allows viewers to re-interpret Willow's relationship with Buffy ; in the first three seasons, Willow is often disappointed that she is not a higher priority to Buffy, and even after Willow enters a relationship with Tara, still desires to feel integral to Buffy's cause and the Scooby Gang.

Together, they form the Scooby Gang, and work together to battle various supernatural occurrences which plague Sunnydale High.

After being captured by the Initiative and implanted with a cerebral microchip which punishes him with debilitating pain whenever he harms or attempts to harm any non-demon life forms, Spike turns to the Scooby Gang for protection, bartering his knowledge of the Initiative.

Occasionally helping the Scooby Gang by providing them with information and / or combat assistance in exchange for cash or for the joy of fighting, but having no qualms about betraying them to such enemies as Faith and Adam.

He becomes a more active participant in the Scooby Gang, jumping into several of Buffy's fights to provide assistance, whether she wants it or not.

During this time, her relationship to Spike deepens and she is able to talk to him about things she feels she cannot share with the Scooby Gang.

Although the Scooby Gang later joked that he wore tweed diapers as a child, Giles was in fact a rebellious youth, rejecting his responsibility as a Watcher and dropping out of Oxford University, where he was studying history, when he was twenty-one.

He is a father figure to Buffy and an advisor to her friends Xander Harris and Willow Rosenberg, together forming the " core four " of the Scooby Gang.

With a highly energetic and brave personality, despite his small size, Scrappy was the exact opposite of his uncle ; Scrappy would usually insist on trying to directly fight the various monsters Scooby and his associates encountered and generally have to be dragged away by Scooby.

Each season of the series Buffy and the small group of family and friends who work with her, nicknamed the Scooby Gang, must defeat an evil force referred to as the Big Bad ; the villain is usually trying to bring on an apocalypse.

* Scooberang: A continuous block featuring every episode of every Scooby-Doo series ( aired in chronological order ), beginning with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You !, as well as some feature-length films, including Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island ; due to the large library of Scooby programming ( which usually spans out to several days nonstop ), Scooberang is no longer airing on Boomerang.

Scooby and Shaggy usually save her, but sometimes Fred and Velma or even the whole gang do it.

Throughout her various incarnations, Velma is usually portrayed as a highly intelligent young woman with highly specific interests in science ( which in the Scooby and Scrappy Doo series leads her to pursue a career as a NASA research scientist ) or merely being very well read on obscure fields, such as ancient Viking writing ( as in the third Scooby Doo series The New Scooby Doo Mysteries ).

But their friends ( Velma, Daphne and Fred ) encourage them to go after the costumed villains, usually with " Scooby Snacks ", a biscuit-like dog treat or cookie snack ( usually shaped like a bone or, in later versions of the cartoons, Scooby's dog tag ), though Scooby's inherent loyalty and courage does often force him to take a more heroic stance.

When searching for clues, Fred and Daphne usually go together with Velma coming along, but sometimes Fred and Daphne would pair off, leaving Velma to go with Shaggy and Scooby.

The main characters usually confront and vanquish these characters, often leaving them never to be seen again ( as in Scooby Doo ).

Being born into money, she often called to her butler, Jenkins ( a pun on Jinkees ), for help ( on occasion Scooby would call for him instead ), usually for incredibly silly reasons (" be scared for me "), something she does not do while older, despite still being fabulously wealthy.

When Angel tried to take Dana back to Wolfram & Hart, Andrew asserts his authority, standing up to Angel ( one of the few who do ) and explains that she belongs with them, not him, also revealing that the Scooby Gang no longer deems the Angel Investigations team trustworthy due to their association with Wolfram & Hart, Buffy herself having ordered Andrew not to leave Dana with Angel.

( September 18, 1976 ): While traveling to a fiesta, the gang encounters an Aztec haunting .< div > Scooby and the gang team up with Blue Falcon and Dynomutt to take on Lowbrow, a stupid crook who wants to increase his intelligence.

hires a dog with no talent to take Scooby's role, leaving Scooby and Shaggy in shock.

While Fred, Velma and Daphne take the tour, Shaggy and Scooby sneak off and look around.

Men in lab coats are seen, and take an interest in Shaggy and Scooby.

Ultimately, Shaggy chooses Scooby ( mostly due to Velma's constant pushy attitude and jealousy ) and breaks up with Velma, telling her that he doesn't feel ready to have a girlfriend.

* The effects of a lost soul are touched upon in this episode: Buffy's changing attitude when Kathy is stealing her soul is mentioned by the Scooby Gang at several points.

The animated version of Alexander also exhibits no romantic feelings towards Josie, tends to gravitate towards Valerie, and is very similar to Shaggy Rogers from Scooby Doo.

* The Scooby Gang, shown towards the end of Season One of Angel that Angel and Cordelia are still in contact with Scooby Gang members Rupert Giles and Willow Rosenberg.

Meanwhile Oz tells Willow he's willing to give their relationship another chance while Cordelia isn't as forgiving and resumes her previously hostile ways towards the Scooby gang.
