Another aspect of Seafair is the involvement of the Seafair Pirates, an organization that works year-round entertaining children in hospitals and performing other acts of community service including extensive fundraising.

However, the Pirates also usually perform loud — occasionally offensive — antics at Seafair ( in an attempt to live up to their name ) that cause perennial objection to their prominent involvement in the festivities.

The Seattle, Washington Seafair Pirates are a voluntary group of people started in 1949 by the members of the Washington State Press Club.

The Seafair Pirates was founded in 1949 by some of the younger members of the Ale & Quail Society.

The Seafair Pirates are a dedicated group who take their roles as pirates seriously.

The Seafair festival is a month long festival that starts with the Seafair Pirates Landing at Alki Beach in Seattle, usually during the first Saturday of July.

Throughout the summer the Seafair Pirates participate in approximately 40 local festivals as well as several hundred private appearances.

They perform at both military and civilian airfields, and often perform directly over major cities such as San Francisco's " Fleet Week " maritime festival, Cleveland's annual Labor Day Air Show, the Chicago Air and Water Show, and Seattle's annual Seafair festival.

The appropriately attired King Neptune I then opened the first Seafair festival Saturday afternoon as he stepped off the schooner Gracie S. at the foot of Washington Street.

King Neptune, his Prime Minister and the Seafair Queen were responsible for appearing at all major events greeting dignitaries and being spokespersons for the summertime celebration.

Miss Seafair along with King Neptune and the Royal Court, would represent Seattle and the Seafair festival as spokespersons not only during the ten-day celebration, but also during the year at festivals and events throughout the Northwest and the United States.

The 2008 Seafair Half Marathon and Seafair Marathon began at Husky Stadium, crossed the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, and ended at Bellevue, Washington's Bellevue Downtown Park.

One of the most popular events of Seafair is the Seafair Cup, which is an American Boat Racing Association unlimited hydroplane racing circuit stop at Stan Sayres Pits on Lake Washington in the Mount Baker neighborhood.

The Seafair Cup races, which occur at the end of July or the beginning of August, attract tens of thousands of spectators, both those standing on the public shores of the lake, and those in boats anchored just outside the course in the lake itself.

They did not perform at Seafair in 1994 and 1995 as a result of a dispute with the FAA about whether they could safely fly over Lake Washington.

A similar landing at Alki has been reenacted annually since 1950 as part of the colorful, week-long Seafair celebration of Seattle's marine and boating interests.

Major annual events in the neighborhood include the Wallingford Kiddie Parade as part of Seafair, the Wallingford Wurst Festival run by St Benedict's Church, and the Family Fourth fireworks show at Gas Works Park.

They are present at the Seafair parades during the summer months, and the boom of their cannons warn the crowd that they are coming.

In the mid-1980's, local radio personality Pat O ' Day proposed that the Seafair Cup hydroplane races be moved to Lake Sammamish from Lake Washington, an effort that was unsuccessful.

Seafair was deemed a success and the festival would grow the next summer with the addition of the unlimited hydroplane racing class on Lake Washington.

That first Seafair featured parades, boat races on Green Lake, amateur athletic events, royalty, community festivals like West Seattle Hi-Yu Days, Rainier District Pow-wow, Wallingford Pirate Days, the University District Kid ’ s Parade, and the Ballard Festival, and were highlighted by the nightly Aqua Follies performances.

The foundation also organizes the annual Seafair Indian Days, one of the larger pow-wows in the Northwest, held in conjunction with the city's festival called Seafair.
