The Taunus / Cortina was replaced in Europe by the Sierra in late 1982.

The very last Cortina – a silver Crusader – rolled off the Dagenham production line in 22 July 1982 on the launch of the ultramodern Sierra, though there were still a few leaving the forecourt as late as 1987, with one final unregistered Cortina GL leaving a Derbyshire dealership in 2005.

The Cortina wagon had continued on after the sedan was replaced in 1983 by the Mazda-made 626-based Telstar instead of the European Sierra ; Sierra wagons did, however, replace the long-serving ' Cortinny ' wagon in Kiwi assembly.

Although the last Cortina rolled off the production line in 1982, thousands of them remained in stock ( with more than 11, 000 being sold in 1983-something that badly compromised early Sierra sales ), and the final six examples didn't find homes until 1987.

The Cortina range was finally replaced by the 1983 Ford Telstar range and the 1984 Ford Sierra station wagon.

Ironically, the MK5 Cortina based P100 was launched in 1982, the year that the standard Cortina was being replaced by the Sierra.

From July 1971, a locally designed pick-up truck version ( known in Afrikaans as a " bakkie ") was also offered, and this remained in production after the Cortina was replaced by the Sierra.

The Cortina pickup was exported to the UK, in a lengthened wheelbase form, as the Ford p100 until 1988, when Ford divested from South Africa, and a European built pick-up truck version of the Sierra was introduced in its place.

The last brand new Cortina was sold in South Africa by mid 1984, and it was often the countries top selling car, and was far more popular than the Sierra and Mondeos which followed it.

The Ford Cortina had been manufactured in saloon and estate bodystyles but after the switch to the Sierra, combined with the redesign of the Escort to Mark III level in 1980 and the introduction of the Granada Mark III in 1985, Ford had changed its saloon-based line-up into a hatchback-based one.

The company launched the Ford Orion in 1983 to fill the gap in the saloon range between the late Cortina and the new Sierra.

While the Cortina MkV in South Africa had retained the old 3. 0 V6 Essex engine, the Sierra was initially given the new 2. 3 V6 Cologne motor, this being fitted to the top of the line model only.

However, owing to the low cost of petrol, and the popularity of the old Cortina XR6, a Sierra XR6 was launched in 1986 / 7, featuring the old Essex, initially producing.

Whereas British buyers rued the absence of a saloon version of the Sierra, in New Zealand, it was the absence of an estate ( a " station wagon " there ) that customers missed, when Ford New Zealand replaced the Cortina with the Ford Telstar range.

In the beginning the Sierra used engines and transmissions from the Taunus / Cortina.

In 1989, Ford nodded towards its past and created the Sierra 2. 0i 2000E, a model name used with limited success on the Mk3 Cortina.

Unlike the Cortina, or its Sierra successor, the Telstar was usually only available as a sedan or hatchback ( known as the TX5 ).

The Sierra had sold well, but not as well as the all-conquering Cortina before it, and in Britain, it had been overtaken in the sales charts by the newer Vauxhall Cavalier.

This placed it as Britain's fourth best selling car, putting it just 35, 000 sales short of its key rival, the Ford Cortina, which was replaced that autumn by the all-new Sierra.

In South Africa it also powered the 1. 6l Mk II, Mk III, Mk IV, & Mk V Ford Cortina and 1. 6l Ford Sierra.
