The Silver Star or Silver Star Medal ( awarded to Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel ) is the third highest military decoration for valor that can be awarded to any person serving in any capacity with the United States Armed Forces.
The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States not justifying one of the two higher ranking valor decorations – the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, and the Air Force Cross awards for extraordinary heroism or the Medal of Honor, the highest ranking military award, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.
The Silver Star may be awarded to any individual serving in any capacity with the U. S. Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself by gallantry in action under any of the following circumstances:

Soldiers who received a Citation Star for gallantry in action during World War I were eligible to apply to have the citation converted to the Silver Star ( see " History " below ).
On July 19, 1932, the Secretary of War approved the Silver Star to replace the Citation Star.
The original Citation Star is incorporated into the center of the Silver Star, and the service ribbon and suspension ribbon for the Silver Star is based closely on the Certificate of Merit Medal.
