Upson County is home to Southern Crescent Technical College-Flint River Campus, and several sites draw tourism to the area.

One being the Southern Crescent Broadcasting, Channel 15, owned and operated by J2 Productions.

Southern Crescent Broadcasting is a six time Telly Award winner.

In 1911, the town was served by five railroad lines: Alabama Great Southern ( Queen & Crescent route ), the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, the Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham ( St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad system ), the Birmingham Southern Railroad, and the Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic railways.

As Southern's railway partners sought to discontinue passenger services, Southern Railway rerouted the train to an all-Southern route and operated the train as the Southern Crescent between Washington, DC's Union Station and New Orleans.

For the combined Southern Crescent, Southern moved the train to the Birmingham route instead of the Mobile route.

Each morning, the Crescent and the Southern Crescent departed Atlanta for New Orleans over different routes.

After May 1, 1971, Amtrak, assuming the services of the Penn Central, carried the Southern Crescent between New York and Washington.
