The Zoo's original animal collection consisted of eight monkeys, two Grizzly Bears, three White-tailed Deer, six raccoons, two elk, an American Bison, a Spotted Hyena, an American Alligator, a circus elephant, a tiger and over four hundred birds, which included a crow.

There are also animals such as Barking Deer, Macaque, Wild Boar, Civet cat, Pangolin, Chinese Porcupine and Squirrel ; birds such as the Greater Coucal, Great Barbet, Chinese Bulbul, Crested Mynah, Spotted Dove and Black-eared Kite ; and a large variety of insects and about 240 species of butterflies.

Many native fauna also make the Hoh Rainforest their home, including the Pacific Tree Frog ( Pseudacris regilla ), Northern Spotted Owl ( Strix occidentalis caurina ), Bobcat ( Lynx rufus ), Cougar ( Felis concolor couguar ), Raccoon ( Procyon lotor ), Olympic Black Bear ( Ursus americanus altifrontalis ), Roosevelt elk ( Cervus canadensis roosevelti ), and Black-tailed Deer ( Odocoileus columbianus ).

Fauna includes Powerful Owl, Barking Owl, Australian King Parrot, Brush Turkey, Eastern Whipbird, Satin Bowerbird, Eastern Water Dragon, Emerald Spotted Frog, Enamelled Spider, Red triangle slug, Blue Planarian, Long-nosed Bandicoot and marsupial mouse.

Species found in the sanctuary include bonnet and lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langur, gaur ( or Indian bison ), sambar deer, muntjac ( or barking deer ), Indian Spotted Chevrotain ( or mouse deer ), wild boar, Indian elephant and different species of squirrels, such as the Indian giant and Indian palm squirrels.

Spotted deer, sambar and barking deer were a common sight in the district before Independence.

Spotted hyenas, under these circumstances, would have been outcompeted by wolves and humans, who were as much at home in forests as in open lands — and in highlands as in lowlands.

The name was changed from ' Spotted Mist ' to ' Australian Mist ' in 1998 when cats with marbled coats, rather than spots, were accepted as part of the breed.

Northern Spotted Owl eggs in western Oregon were incubated for about 30 days and hatched from 8 April to 20 May.

In Washington and Oregon, the majority of radio-marked Northern Spotted Owls were paired by two years of age, and recruitment of banded owls into the territorial population occurred at an average age of 2. 4 years.

Given that 67 % of northern Spotted Owls in Washington and Oregon that died from other causes were diseased, illness may increase the risk of mortality.

In coniferous forests of the Klamath, Coast and Cascade regions in Oregon and the Olympic peninsula of Washington, nest locations were significantly lower ( P < 0. 001 ) in elevation than random sites within northern Spotted Owl's home ranges.

In coniferous forests of the eastern Cascade Range of Washington, elevation of Northern Spotted Owl nest sites was negatively associated with latitude ( P < 0. 001 ), and site occupancy and reproductive rates were inversely associated with elevation.

Most of Mexican Spotted Owl nests in Arizona and New Mexico ( 95 %) were in trees at elevations from 6, 000 to 8, 500 feet ( 1, 829 – 2, 591 m ), with 72 % occurring from 6, 500 to 7, 500 feet ( 1, 982 and 2, 287 m ).

In southern Arizona, 7 out of 10 of Mexican Spotted Owl nest / roost sites were on northwest facing slopes.

In mixed-evergreen and mixed-conifer forests of northwestern California, steep slopes were used by nesting Northern Spotted Owls in proportion with availability.

California Spotted Owl nesting and roosting sites were significantly ( P < 0. 001 ) steeper than random sites in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Mexican Spotted Owl nest areas in Arizona were significantly ( P < 0. 001 ) steeper ( x = 38. 5 %) than random sites ( x = 20. 6 %).

In foothill riparian and oak woodlands in the southern Sierra Nevada, California Spotted Owl nest sites were typically on the lower third of slopes.

In managed timberlands in the coastal redwood vegetation zone of northwestern California, Northern Spotted Owl nest areas were closer to water than randomly-selected plots ( P = 0. 032 ).

High California Spotted Owl reproductive rates were associated with less precipitation and higher minimum temperatures during the breeding season ( March – May ).

For example, data from Douglas-fir / hardwood and mixed-conifer forests of northwestern California suggest that decreases in Northern Spotted Owl survival associated with cold, wet weather were more gradual in landscapes with features considered high quality compared to landscapes with low-quality features.

In a western Oregon study, over 90 % of roosting and nesting locations were in old-growth coniferous forests, and Northern Spotted Owls foraged in these forests significantly ( P < 0. 05 ) more than would be expected based on availability within their home ranges.

Increased old-growth and mature tree basal areas were also characteristic of stands occupied by California Spotted Owls.

In northern Arizona some foraging Mexican Spotted Owls selected old-growth mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine forests ( generally > 200 years old ) more than expected based on availability within the home range, while managed forests in this area were avoided.

For instance, there was no significant difference ( P > 0. 3 ) in mistletoe infestation rating between small Northern Spotted Owl nest plots and nest stands, although 84 % of nest plots were infested.

Gettinger, Cowan and Kerlee all died of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever during the research efforts.

Spotted seatrout, red drum, Spanish and king mackerel, flounder, snapper, grouper, sharks, and more are all available to anglers during the fishing season.

Results from the monitoring programs of the Swiss Ornithological Institute show that the breeding populations of several forest species for which deadwood is an important habitat element ( Black Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, European Green Woodpecker, Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker as well as European Crested Tit, Willow Tit and Eurasian Treecreeper ) have increased in the period 1990 to 2008, although not to the same extent in all species.

Eastern towhees of all ages and both sexes are generally unmistakable and are not known to co-exist with the similar western Spotted Towhee.

According to a literature review of all three Spotted Owl subspecies, migratory Spotted Owls move through vegetation types not typically considered suitable Spotted Owl habitat.

Average annual survival rate estimates are usually more than 0. 8 for adults of all three subspecies, although average annual survival rates as low as 0. 75 have been reported for northern Spotted Owls.

However, on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, where Douglas-fir was not present in all stands, Northern Spotted Owl nests occurred with about equal frequency in Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western redcedar.

Northern flying squirrels commonly comprise greater than 30 % of the diets ( all percentages are by mass ) of Northern Spotted owls and California Spotted Owls in conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada.

While there may be safety in their numbers, the squid are an important prey item for large fish such as tuna and sharks and a number of cetaceans: Pygmy Killer Whales, Orcas, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Rough-toothed Dolphins, and Bottlenose Dolphins are all known predators of Slender Inshore Squid.

Tang Long is above seven chi tall and has several coin-shaped spots all over his body, which earns him the nickname " Gold Coin Spotted Leopard ".

The Spotted Pardalote ( Pardalotus punctatus ) is one of the smallest of all Australian birds at 8 to 10 cm in length, and one of the most colourful ; it is sometimes known as the Diamondbird.

All Pardalotes have spots and all nest in tunnels at least sometimes ; the Spotted Pardalote has the most conspicuous spots and ( like the Red-browed Pardalote ) always nests in tunnels.
