Lane had seen Mariani in the final few gigs of the Go-Starts and asked him for guitar lessons which became jams, then writing songs, and finally the decision was made to form The Stems.

The Stems had performed at their last live show on 31 August 1987, but it wasn't officially announced until November 1987.

The Stems also released their long overdue second album, Heads Up on Shock Records.

Ben Folds released Stems & Seeds, special version of his 2008 album, Way to Normal.

Traditionally, years were marked by one of twelve Earthly Branches, represented by an animal, and one of ten Heavenly Stems, which correspond to the five elements.

The Stems having completed several national tours were perhaps one of the first bands to gain national success while remaining in Perth, and despite never having toured internationally they are held in high esteem in Europe and the US amongst fans of classic 60s and garage inspired rock ‘ n ’ roll.

A one off " Fremantle supergroup " named The Roundhouse formed in 2010 consisting of Dom Mariani ( The Stems ), Greg Hitchcock ( You Am I, The Kryptonics ), Felicity Groom, Steve Gibson ( The Kill Devil Hills ) and Sophie Elton ( The Jam Tarts, Nansing Quartet ).

In Latin, nouns of the first, second, fourth, and fifth declensions are considered thematic ; the first declension has the theme vowel a, the second o, the fourth u, and the fifth e. Stems with i are treated together with athematic stems in the third declension, as they came to closely resemble one another.

The rest are kanji commonly used in numbering and ordering systems: 4 numerals ichi " one ", ni " two ", san " three ", and yon " four "; 3 locatives ue " top ", naka 中 " middle ", and shita " bottom "; 4 Heavenly Stems kinoe " first ", kinoto " second ", hinoe " third ", and hinoto " fourth "; and the 3 cosmological ten " heaven ", chi " earth ", and jin " person ".

Stems can attain lengths of over one metre in a single growing season, but die back and form turions in winter.

The Stems, with a new drummer, David Shaw, on board spent most of 1986 touring to promote their EP, including national tours supporting Flamin ' Groovies and the Hoodoo Gurus, and also seeking a label deal.

Stems range from about 1 to 4 feet in length.

Following the re-release of their album At First Sight, Violets Are Blue and the release of the Mushroom Soup: The Citadel Years in 2003, The Stems found themselves playing to packed houses across the country, touring Europe, playing the prestigious " Little Stevens Underground Garage Festival " in August 2005, and then at the " Come Together Festival " at Sydney ’ s Luna Park with the cream of Australia ’ s newest bands in September 2005.

The Stems then toured nationally to promote the new album, playing their first shows outside Australia last year, including European dates and a successful U. S visit which included the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

Stems and Seeds contained a remastered version of Way to Normal, and a separate disc containing GarageBand files for each track from the album to allow fans to remix the songs.

The Stems first Sydney show was a sold out show with the Painters and Dockers at the Trade Union Club.

In 1981 Gudinski started White Label Records, an alternative Mushroom label, to release innovative music, with signings such as Hunters & Collectors, Machinations, Painters and Dockers, Kids in the Kitchen and The Stems.

The Heavenly Stems were used in combination with the Earthly Branches, a similar cycle of twelve days, to produce a compound cycle of sixty days.

Subsequently, the Heavenly Stems lost their original function as names for days of the week and dead kin, and acquired many other uses, the most prominent and long lasting of which was their use together with the Earthly Branches as a 60-year calendrical cycle.

The Earthly Branches are today used with the Heavenly Stems in the current version of the " traditional calendar " and in Taoism.

During a divination session, the shell or bone was anointed with blood, and in an inscription section called the " preface ", the date was recorded using the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the diviner name was noted.

Stems and leaves are finely arachnoid-tomentose becoming glabrous and green with age.

Stems, leaves and sometimes even the fruit are covered with spines.

Stems range from 20 – 33 cm ( 8 – 13 in ) in diameter, occasionally reaching up to 100 cm ( 40 in ).

Stems are usually short, however the stem of Laelia anceps can be more than 1 m long.

The Stems played at local venues such as The Wizbah, The Old Melbourne and The Shenton Park Hotel on a regular basis, the group built up a substantial following in Perth, at a time otherwise dominated by cover bands.

Elements of their sound are similar to aspects of successful contemporary Australian bands of the time, such as Died Pretty, Hoodoo Gurus, The Stems and The Church as well as American groups Green on Red and The Dream Syndicate.
