Silver Lake, west of Conesus Lake, would seem to qualify because it is in the Great Lakes watershed, but Waneta and Lamoka lakes are part of the Susquehanna River watershed as they drain into a tributary of the Chemung River.

East of Oneida and Cazenovia Lakes are the headwaters of the Susquehanna River and Hudson River watersheds ( the former in the foothills of the Catskills, the latter through the Mohawk Valley and southern Adirondack Mountains ).

In the earliest days of European settlement of the Atlantic coast, the frontier was essentially any part of the forested interior of the continent lying beyond the fringe of existing settlements along the coast and the great rivers, such as the St. Lawrence, Connecticut, Hudson, Delaware, Susquehanna River and James.

The Chenango River joins the Susquehanna River, which flows through the county.

The Chenango River, a tributary of the Susquehanna River flows southward through the county.

Tully is at the divide between two major watersheds, one flowing northward to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the St. Lawrence River and the other southward to the ocean vie the Susquehanna River.

The Susquehanna River flows into Pennsylvania from this county.

The western border is defined by the lower reaches of the Susquehanna River and the northernmost coves, flats and tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay.

Because the county sits at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay along the Susquehanna River, it plays a key role in controlling sediment and fertilizer runoff into the bay as well as fostering submerged aquatic vegetation ( SAV ) regrowth.

The landfill, approved to triple in size in 2007, is the subject of complaints by neighbors of operating violations, such as large areas of open trash and blown litter, leachate breaks which contaminate area residential wells and flow into Deer Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River, and increased health problems.

* Susquehanna River National Wildlife Refuge

Prior to railroads the only economical means of transportation of goods was via water, and the Susquehanna River is not navigable between Binghamton and the Atlantic coast.

In June 1881 the NJ Midland was consolidated with five other railroads to form the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway, a name which it still holds.

So much water came from the Chenango, that the Susquehanna flowed backwards for some distance above the confluence.

In late August 2011, Hurricane Irene off the New Jersey coast caused the Susquehanna River to rise to flood stage but was no cause for alarm for the city.

The southern boundary of Pennsylvania, and thus of Lancaster County, was in dispute for years, culminating in nine years of armed clashes during the Maryland-Pennsylvania boundary dispute beginning with the 1730 establishment of Wright's Ferry across the Susquehanna River.

Spurred by a sudden influx of settlers crossing the Susquehanna and the licensing and formal beginning of the Wright's Ferry ferry services early in the year, acting on behalf of Maryland as a henchman of Lord Baltimore, Thomas Cresap starting in mid-1730, began confiscating the newly settled farms near Peach Bottom and Columbia, Pennsylvania ( thenunnamed, but soon would be called " Wright's Ferry "), for the question from Lord Baltimore, was who was to get the income from the lands.

Establishment of the eponymous Wright's Ferry, the first commercial Susquehanna crossing in the region, inflamed territorial conflict with neighboring Maryland but brought growth and prosperity to the small town, which was briefly considered as a candidate for the new United States ' capital.

The same year, the world's longest covered bridge was built across the Susquehanna to Wrightsville, facilitating traffic flow across the river and reducing the need for the ferry.

After handling traffic across the Susquehanna for 18 years, it was destroyed by high water, ice, and severe weather in the winter of 1832.

In February 1826, the Pennsylvania state legislature approved $ 300, 000 for the construction of a canal along the Susquehanna ’ s eastern shore to bypass rapids and shallows and make the river navigable anywhere along its route.

Most of the county is drained by the Delaware River ( which separates it from New York ,) except for small western areas drained by the Starrucca Creek and the Lackawanna River into the Susquehanna River.

Susquehanna County was created on February 21, 1810, from part of Luzerne County and named for the Susquehanna River.

First a change to Lycoming County was rejected, next the name Susquehanna County was struck down as was Muncy County, before the legislature revisited and settled on Lycoming County for Lycoming Creek, the stream that was the center of the pre-Revolutionary border dispute.

It is drained by the Lehigh River except for a small area in western Packer Township and the borough of Lansford that are drained by the Still Creek and Panther Creek, respectively, into the Little Schuylkill River and the Schuylkill River, and the Audenried area in the northwest corner that drains into the Susquehanna River via the Catawissa Creek.

Of the secondary camps, Camp Cone's remote Houck Lodge is often used by non-scout groups and for training events and, along with Camp Finney, the forests are used for hiking, backpack camping, and orienteering, with paddling access to both the mile-long Lake Straus waters and to the huge Conowingo Reservoir ( Susquehanna River ).

It was used for seasonal duck hunters on the Susquehanna Flats in the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Wellwood Club ( CE-394 ): Located on Water Street and built in the mid-19th Century to house seasonal wildfowl hunters, the “ Wellwood Club ” was an ideal location for duck hunting on Chesapeake Bay ’ s Susquehanna Flats.

The town is located near an access for Interstate 95, on the north side of the outlet of the Susquehanna River.

This location and Lapidum across the river were the Northern-most navigable deep water ports on the Susquehanna River, allowing access for ship traffic from the Chesapeake Bay.

In the early days it was difficult to float goods downriver, since there were many rapids and hazards, but it still remained the most convenient way for goods to leave much of the country drained by the Susquehanna above the falls.

The Port Deposit Bridge Company was incorporated in 1808 for the purpose of constructing a bridge across the Susquehanna.

Granite quarries were also opened here in 1829 by the proprietors of a competitor canal, the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal between Havre de Grace, Maryland and Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, for canal construction projects routed along the opposite bank of the Susquehanna.
