Haile Selassie I ( Ge ' ez:, " Power of the Trinity ") ( 23 July 1892 – 27 August 1975 ), born Tafari Makonnen ,< ref >

Tafari Makonnen ( the future Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia ) was one of the first Ethiopians who contracted influenza but survived, although many of his subjects did not ; estimates for the fatalities in the capital city, Addis Ababa, range from 5, 000 to 10, 000, or higher ,.

Tafari Makonnen, the last sovereign Emperor of Ethiopia, took as his throne name Haile Selassie, meaning " Power of the Trinity ".

The first woman head of an internationally recognized state in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries, she was noted for opposing the reforms of Tafari Makonnen ( later Emperor Haile Selassie I ) and for her strong religious devotion.

Woizero Menen probably met Dejazmach Tafari Makonnen ( later Emperor Haile Selassie ) at the home of her uncle, Lij Iyasu.

He therefore arranged the separation of Woizero Menen from Ras Leul Seged, and sent her to Harar to marry Dejazmatch Tafari Makonnen.

He was among the leaders who fought on the side of Dejazmach Tafari Makonnen in the Battle of Segale, and died in that battle.

When Tafari Makonnen became Emperor of Ethiopia as Haile Selassie I, Menen Asfaw was crowned as Empress at his side.

Born as Asfaw Wossen Taffari, in the walled city of Harrar, to Dejazmach Tafari Makonnen, then the governor of Harrar and future Emperor of Ethiopia, and his wife Menen Asfaw, on 27 July 1916.

He began preaching in 1933 about what he considered the symbolic portent for the African diaspora — the crowning of Ras Tafari Makonnen as Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia.

The pre-coronation name of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie the First was " Tafari Makonnen ".

It was awarded to Negus Mikael, father of Iyasu V, but changed to Negus of Wollo in consideration of the feelings of many princes in northern Ethiopia, then after his son Lij Iyasu's deposition the title went to Tafari Makonnen, who later became Emperor Haile Selassie.

He has also invoked " Ras H. Tafari ".

The album, and its dub counterpart, Israel Tafari ( aka Same Song Dub ) were a success internationally, leading to a deal with EMI label Harvest to reissue the album in the UK, the label also releasing a second album, Unconquered People in 1980.

With Atnafu Abate, he managed to avoid the infamous Derg meeting of 3 February 1977, where a number of Derg leaders, including chairman Lieutenant General Tafari Benti, were killed in an ambush orchestrated by Mengistu Haile Mariam ; the Ottaways assume that he " had apparently sided with Mengistu.

After nine of weeks of what LaFort describes as " strenuous internal negotiations ", on 29 December 1976 Tafari delivered a speech, announcing that the Derg had been restructured.

This meeting ended with the deaths of not only Tafari and the two captains, but four other Derg members who had been opposed to Mengistu-Lieutenant Colonel Asrat Desta, Lieutenant Colonel Heruy Haile Selassie, Captain Tefera Denke, and Corporal Haile Belay-as well as one Derg member who supported Mengistu, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Asfaw, and a civilian Senay Likke.

" A number of Derg members, including Mengistu, had met that morning to discuss a document which described the " class peace " Tafari Bente had publicly endorsed, and after hours of arguing, it was clear that there was a deadlock on the issue.

Shortly afterwards, Radio Ethiopia broadcast a charge by Mengistu that Tafari and his associates had been killed because they were secret supporters of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party ( EPRP ).

Ras Leul Seged apparently did not hold a grudge against Dejazmatch Tafari for this circumstance, blaming it entirely on Lij Iyasu who had ordered it.

Initially confronted by police for their unlicensed use of public land, the initial group of eight men and women had the benefit of a forceful voice in the person of homeless activist Jack Tafari, and the early support of a few local politicians and associated coverage in the local media.

" Tafari " is the Amharic word for Creator, Almighty, awesome, Father and one who needs to be worshipped.

Once news of his death reached Ethiopia, Empress Zewditu and Ras Tafari ordered requiem masses be said throughout Ethiopia, and that government offices be closed for three days.

The name Rastafari is taken from Ras Tafari, the pre-regnal title of Haile Selassie I, composed of Amharic Ras ( literally " Head ", an Ethiopian title equivalent to Duke ), and Haile Selassie's pre-regnal given name, Tafari.

Rasta doctrines concerning the Trinity include stressing the significance of the name " Haile Selassie ", meaning " Power of the Trinity " or " Might of the Trinity " or powerful trinity in Ge ' ez — the name given to Ras Tafari upon his baptism, and later assumed as part of his regal name at his November 2, 1930, coronation by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Between July and September 1974, Mengistu became the most influential member of the shadowy Derg, but preferred to act through more public members like his former mentor, general Aman Andom, and later Tafari Benti.

Mengistu did not emerge as the leader of the Derg until after the 3 February 1977 shootout, in which Tafari Banti was killed.

He lacked the diplomatic skill and the refined sense of discretion that came naturally to Tafari.

Brigadier General Tafari Benti ( 1921 – 1977 ) was the Head of State of Ethiopia ( 28 November 1974 – 3 February 1977 ), and chairman of the Derg, the ruling junta.

Tafari Benti was born near Addis Ababa.

Mengistu Haile Mariam served as interim president until the Derg appointed Tafari Bente to the position.

During his tenure Tafari presented himself as the public face of the ruling junta.

" However, according to Rene LaFort's account, Tafari offered some hints that he supported those opposed to Mengistu.

And Tafari Bente went even further and, flanked by Captains Mogus and Almayahu, criticized the lack of a vanguard party in words which LaFort interprets as declaring " the bloody war between MEISON and the EPRP to be politically unjustifiable, and that it should in any case remain limited to the civilian Left without the army intervening in any way.

Mengistu then asked that Tafari attend the meeting, and met the Chairman of the Derg outside who told Mengistu that there was nothing to discuss ; tempers flared, a soldier belonging to the anti-Mengistu faction started shooting, and Mengistu's bodyguards opened fire, killing Tafari instantly and fatally wounding Senay Likke ; Mengistu then took the 12. 7 machine gun from the armed car outside the meeting room and sprayed the corridor and entrance to the meeting room, slaughtering the others.

The rapport between the two may have inspired Lij Iyasu to attempt to bind Dejazmach Tafari to him more firmly through marriage ties.

Ras Betwoded Makonnen Endelkachew should not be confused with his son, Endelkachew Makonnen who was also an Ethiopian political figure and Prime Minister.

Since his older brothers, Prince Asfa Wossen and Prince Makonnen, had both been born before the 1930 coronation, Prince Sahle Selassie was also the first legitimate child born to a reigning Emperor since the birth of Dejazmach Alemayehu Tewodros, son of Emperor Tewodros II.

He was also commissioned to produce sculptures of famous Ethiopians, although only the monumental statue of Ras Makonnen in Harrar was completed.
