As a Democrat ( after his criminal indictment by the Taft Administration ), Watson was an ardent supporter of Roosevelt.

To resolve the long-standing dispute over trusts, the Wilson Administration dropped the " trust-busting " legal strategies of Roosevelt and Taft and relied on the new a Federal Trade Commission to issue orders prohibiting " unfair methods of competition " by business concerns in interstate trade.

A proud moment for the school came on October 23, 1911, when the president of the United States, William Howard Taft, gave a speech, combing foreign policy issues with the role of the Normal school, in the newly completed auditorium of the Administration Building.

Taft's administration got a political boost after 25 western railroads announced an intent to raise rates by 20 %, and Taft responded, first with a threat to enforce the Sherman Antitrust Act against them ; he then negotiated a settlement whereby they agreed to submit delayed rate requests to a new Interstate Commerce Commission having authority over rate requests.

Rapid expansion of national security expenditures during the Korean War had produced alarm over high taxes, large deficits, government controls, and a possible “ garrison state ” among such prominent conservatives as Senator Robert Taft ( R ‐ Ohio ).

In 1912, Democrat candidate Woodrow Wilson had carried the county with a 3. 06 % majority over its Republican opponent William Taft.
