The ancient city of Rome had a place called the Campus, a sort of drill ground for Roman soldiers, which was located near the Tiber river.

Although the phrase " rivers of blood " does not appear in the speech, it does include the line, " As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding ; like the Roman, I seem to see ' the River Tiber foaming with much blood.

( Another account has it that he was killed by " a certain Roman soldier named Ursus ") His body was mutilated and flung into the Tiber.

The tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian, also called Hadrian's mole, was erected on the right bank of the Tiber, between 130 AD and 139 AD.

There was extensive immigration into Rome from peoples of Roman imperial territories, Juvenal wrote " Long since Syrian Orontes has flown into the River Tiber, and has brought with it its language and manners ".
