John Townes Van Zandt ( March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997 ), best known as Townes Van Zandt, was an American Texas Country-folk music singer-songwriter, performer, and poet.

Townes Van Zandt was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to a wealthy oil family.

Townes ' parents were Harris Williams Van Zandt ( 1913 – 1966 ) and Dorothy Townes (?- 1983 ).

He released five albums during the time period: Our Mother the Mountain, Townes Van Zandt, Delta Momma Blues, High, Low and in Between, and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt.
