The Tsiranavor Surb Hovhannes Church of Avan ( 595 – 602 ) of Avan district which was partly damaged in the 1679 earthquake, is the city's oldest surviving church.

The city boasts two more churches, including the church of Surb Sarkis ( Saint Sargis ), supposedly built in the 19th century on an old foundation.
