In 1986, WHO started it global programme on the growing problem of HIV / AIDS, followed two years later by additional attention on preventing discrimination against sufferers and UNAIDS was formed in 1996.

In terms of HIV / AIDS, WHO works within the UNAIDS network and considers it important that it works in alignment with UNAIDS objectives and strategies.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS, or UNAIDS, is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV / AIDS epidemic.

UNAIDS seeks to prevent the HIV / AIDS epidemic from becoming a severe pandemic.

The aim of UNAIDS is to help mount and support an expanded response to HIV / AIDS, one that engages the efforts of many sectors and partners from government and civil society.

Established in 1994 by a resolution of the UN Economic and Social Council and launched in January 1996, UNAIDS is guided by a Programme Coordinating Board with representatives of 22 governments from all geographic regions, the UNAIDS Cosponsors, and five representatives of nongovernmental organizations ( NGOs ), including associations of people living with HIV / AIDS.

The United Nations Declaration Commitment on HIV / AIDS provides the guiding framework for UNAIDS action.

As the main advocate for global action on HIV / AIDS, UNAIDS leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV / AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS ) became operational in 1996, and it took over the planning and promotion of World AIDS Day.

Since 2006, Stéphanie has been a Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS ) ambassador.

A conclusion from a review by UNAIDS in September 2000, regarding collaboration with traditional healers in HIV / AIDS prevention and care, found that modern and traditional belief systems are not incompatible, but complimentary.

The UNAIDS / WHO policy statement on HIV Testing states that conditions under which people undergo HIV testing must be anchored in a human rights approach that pays due respect to ethical principles.

Later in the year, she joined the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS ) as their Goodwill Ambassador in India, to promote public awareness on HIV prevention, treatment and support, with emphasis on women and children, and combat discrimination against it.

He has previously served as a UNAIDS Pacific spokesman, and in October2004 chaired the first conference of Pacific Parliamentarians on the Role of Pacific Parliamentarians in the fight against HIV / AIDS, in Suva.

On 12 December 1994, he was appointed Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS ) and Assistant-Secretary-General of the United Nations.

During her reign, she was honored by the United Nations and bestowed the title of UNAIDS and UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador for her work in HIV / AIDS education and awareness.

UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé has said that the world is likely to witness ‘ our worst nightmare ’ if funding for HIV / AIDS medicines falls short of sustaining those already on anti-retroviral medicines.

As a result of these findings, the WHO and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS ) stated that male circumcision is an efficacious intervention for HIV prevention but should be carried out by well trained medical professionals and under conditions of informed consent ( parents consent for their infant boys ).

The joint WHO / UNAIDS recommendation also notes that circumcision only provides partial protection from HIV and should never replace known methods of HIV prevention.

On Wednesday, March 28, 2007, the World Health Organisation ( WHO ) and UNAIDS issued joint recommendations concerning male circumcision and HIV / AIDS.

In line with UNAIDS, WHO has set itself the interim task between 2009 and 2015 of reducing the number of those aged 15 – 24 years who are infected by 50 %; reducing new HIV infections in children by 90 %; and reducing HIV-related deaths by 25 %.

The WHO and UNAIDS recommend male circumcision as a means of reducing the rate of HIV infection, but this has also proved controversial, with doubts raised about the efficacy of mass circumcision campaigns in sub-Saharan Africa.

( This despite the actions of United Nations bodies ( i. e. WHO and UNAIDS ), who support these policies.

It is a member of the United Nations Development Group .. Its first executive director was Peter Piot ; Michel Sidibé currently leads UNAIDS.

As a co-sponsor of UNAIDS and under the UNAIDS division of labour, UNFPA focuses its response on HIV prevention among young people, women and marginalized groups, including within the context of sex work.

Bunn and Netter took their idea to Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of the Global Programme on AIDS ( now known as UNAIDS ).

Rather than focus on a single day, UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on year-round communications, prevention and education.

PEPFAR establishes bilateral programs in host countries and also works closely with multilateral partners, such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the United Nations program on AIDS ( UNAIDS ), as well as the Peace Corps and local Faith-Based Organizations PEPFAR_Inter-faith_New_Partners_Initiative.

To fulfil this mandate, UNAIDS is supported by voluntary contributions from governments, foundations, corporations, private groups ( for example, students, universities, sporting clubs, etc.

On 14 June 2005, Nailatikau was appointed the UNAIDS Special Representative for the Pacific.

According to UNAIDS, it stated that circumcision was unnecessary for Christians ; El-Hout and Khauli, however, regard it as condemnation of the procedure.

Speakers included Mary Robinson ( former President of Ireland and former High Commissioner for Human Rights ), Ana Cabral ( Minister of human rights in the Brazilian government ), Frederico Villegas ( Head of Human Rights for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina ) and Dianela Pi ( First secretary of the Uruguayan mission to the UN ), and leading lights from UNAIDS and other NGOs.

According to the 2011 UNAIDS Report, HIV prevalence has declined among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics, young people ( ages 15 – 24 years ) and men in the general population.

UNAIDS estimates that there are a total of about 1, 200, 000 people in the U. S. living with HIV as of 2009, and that 310, 000 of these are women ( female 15 + years of age ).

The mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to HIV and AIDS that includes preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support to those already living with the virus, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
