The historic Valley House is located in The Valley, near Dugort in the north-east of Achill Island.

At the time, in the 1890s, the issue of land ownership in Ireland was politically charged, and after the events at the Valley House in 1894 Lynchehaun was to claim that his actions were motivated by politics.

He escaped custody and fled to the United States, where he successfully defeated legal attempts by the British authorities to have him extradited to face charges arising from the attack and the burning of the Valley House.

The Valley House is now a hostel and bar offering accommodation and pitch and putt golf facilities.

Some of the early settlers to the area were the Collins family of Chestnut Ridge Farm, for whom Chestnut Ridge Middle School is named after ; the Turner family, for whom Turnersville was named ; the Hurff family, for whom the census designation Hurffville and Hurffville Elementary School are named ; the Heritage family, whose family began the Heritage's Dairy Farm Stores, and for whom the community Heritage Valley is named ; the Morgan family, who were the first residents of the Olde Stone House, a landmark for residents of the Township ; and the Bell Family, who arrived in 1899, turning the 139-year-old grist mill into General Mills, and for whom Bells Lake Park and Bells Elementary School are named.

The township is also served by the New Jersey Transit in White House, offering service on the Raritan Valley Line to Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal, with connecting service to Penn Station New York in Midtown Manhattan.

The Movie House features foreign films, live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera, and a cafe / gallery dubbed as one of the " best hipster hangouts " by Hudson Valley Magazine readers.

The first recorded settlers arrived in the Sacandaga River Valley area via Fish House in 1787.

Rotterdam Junction is the site of the Mabee House which, dating to the 17th century, is the oldest house in the Mohawk Valley.

The Smith McLoud House, Italy Valley Methodist Church, and James Fox House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
