" According to the Party's statute, amended at the 9th National Congress on 22 April 2001, the CPV was " established and trained by President Hồ Chí Minh, has led the Vietnamese people to carry out successfully the August Revolution, establishing the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam, now the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam, to defeat foreign invaders, to abolish the colonial and feudalist regime, to liberate and reunify the country, and then carry out the cause of renovation and socialist construction and firmly defend national independence.

In September 1945, after the Japanese withdrawal, Hồ Chí Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, his Việt Minh began fighting the French.

Diệm attempted to travel to Huế to dissuade Bảo Đại from joining Hồ, but was arrested by the Việt Minh along the way and exiled to a highland village near the border.

Six months later, he was taken to meet Hồ in Hanoi, but refused to join the Việt Minh, assailing Hồ for the death of his brother, Khôi, who was reportedly buried alive by Việt Minh cadres.

Diệm was given a respite in November 1946 when clashes between the French and the Việt Minh escalated into full scale war, forcing the Việt Minh to divert their resources.

In 1950, the Việt Minh lost patience and sentenced him to death in absentia, and the French refused to protect him.

Diệm toured the East Coast, speaking at universities, arguing that Vietnam could only be saved for the " free world " if the US sponsored a government of nationalists who were opposed to both the Việt Minh and the French.

The Việt Minh was also estimated to have control over a third of the country.

During the 1946 – 54 war against the French Union forces, the Việt Minh, having gained control of parts of southern Vietnam, initiated land reform.

During the period of war, rent collection, which hovered at around 50 – 70 %, was impossible in some parts of the country, or the Việt Minh had compelled landlords to seek safety in the city and confiscated their land, distributing it to the peasants.

This policy failure generated anger, and in turn sympathy to the Việt Minh who had given the peasants free land.

Due to his recent Japanese associations, Hồ was able to persuade Bảo Đại to abdicate on 25 August 1945, handing power over to the Việt Minh — an event which greatly enhanced Hồ's legitimacy in the eyes of the Vietnamese people.

The communist victory in China in 1949 led to a revival of the fortunes of the Việt Minh.

But the war between the French colonial forces and the Việt Minh continued, ending in 1954 shortly after a major victory for the Việt Minh at Điện Biên Phủ.

The Viet Cong ( Vietnamese: Việt cộng ), or National Liberation Front ( NLF ), was a political organization and army in South Vietnam and Cambodia that fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War ( 1959 – 1975 ), and emerged on the winning side.

The official Vietnamese history gives the group's name as the Liberation Army of South Vietnam or the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam ( Mặt trận Dân tộc Giải phóng miền Nam Việt Nam ).

In 1941 Nguyễn Ái Quốc, now known as Hồ Chí Minh, arrived in northern Vietnam to form the Việt Minh Front, short for Việt Nam Độc Lập Đồng Minh Hội ( League for the Independence of Vietnam ).

The Vietnamese Fatherland Front () founded February 1977 ( merged Vietnamese Fatherland Front of North Vietnam, National Liberation Front of South Vietnam and Alliance of National, Democratic and Peace Forces of Việt Nam in the South Vietnam ), is an umbrella group of pro-government " mass movements " in Vietnam, and has close links to the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese government.

* Vietnamese Fatherland Front ( Mặt trận Tổ quốc Việt Nam ), founded 1955 replaced Vietnamese National Popular Front.

This attack destroyed the base area of the Việt Cộng ’ s B-1 Front Headquarters.

In 1967, Trưởng's 1st Division assaulted and dismantled the Việt Cộng infrastructure and a large part of their fighters from the Luong Co-Dong Xuyen-My Xa Front in Hương Trà District in Thừa Thiên-Huế Province.

There was also a significant war fought against the Lý Dynasty of Vietnam from 1075 to 1077 over a border dispute and the Song's severing of commercial relations with the Đại Việt kingdom.

Việt Minh (; abbreviated from Việt Nam Ðộc Lập Ðồng Minh Hội, English " League for the Independence of Vietnam ") was a communist national independence coalition formed at Pac Bo on May 19, 1941.

The Việt Minh continued fighting against the French until 1949, when the border of China and Vietnam was linked together as the result of the campaign called Chiến dịch Biên giới ( Borderland Campaign ).

Transfer of civil administration of North Vietnam to the Việt Minh was given on October 11, 1954.

The Việt Nam Ðộc Lập Ðồng Minh Hội is not to be confused with the Việt Nam Cách Mạng Ðồng Minh Hội ( League for the Vietnamese Revolution, abbreviated as Việt Cách ) which was founded by Nguyễn Hai Than and Hồ Ngoc Lam, and which later joined the Vietnamese National Coalition in 1946.

The Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam ( Vietnamese: Chính phủ Cách mạng lâm thời Cộng hoà miền Nam Việt Nam ), or PRG, was formed on June 8, 1969, as an underground government opposed to the South Vietnamese government of President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu.

He rose to be district chief, but left the movement after just one year, following the return of the French to southern Vietnam in 1946 to contest Việt Minh control.

Noted Trần Dynasty accomplishments include the creation of a system of population records based at the village level, the compilation of a formal 30-volume history of Đại Việt ( Đại Việt Sử Ký ) by Lê Văn Hưu, and the rising in status of the Nôm script, a system of writing for Vietnamese language.

As China for centuries had referred to Đại Việt as Annam, Gia Long asked the Manchu Qing emperor to rename the country, from Annam to Nam Việt.
