The Nyo group collapses Stewart's Potou – Tano and Ga – Dangme branches and also includes the ungrouped languages of southern Ivory Coast, while the Ka / Na Togo and Gbe languages are called Left bank because they are spoken on the eastern side of the Volta River.

The country owes its former name of Upper Volta to three rivers which cross it: the Black Volta ( or Mouhoun ), the White Volta ( Nakambé ) and the Red Volta ( Nazinon ).

The Black Volta is one of the country's only two rivers which flow year-round, the other being the Komoé, which flows to the southwest.

Among the many rivers that drain into the Gulf of Guinea are the Niger and the Volta.

The flag of Upper Volta was a horizontal tricolour of black, white and red which derive from the three main rivers: The Black Volta, White Volta and the Red Volta.

Black Volta or Mouhoun is a river of western Africa rising in western Burkina Faso and flowing about 1, 352 km ( 840 mi ) to the White Volta in Ghana.

The river originates near Ouagadougou and flows about 320 km to join the White Volta.

The most distant of Akuse cotton growing area in the region, the landscape Awudome which about 13-15 km from the Volta.

The Kintampo people lived in villages composed of rectangular wattle and daub structures ( the historical shape and material of Akan buildings ) at Netereso, overlooking the White Volta, 50 km west of Tamale, in a settlement covering about 750 square metres.

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Gerolamo Umberto Volta ( 18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827 ) was an Italian physicist known for the invention of the battery in the 1800s.

Volta also studied what we now call electrical capacitance, developing separate means to study both electrical potential ( V ) and charge ( Q ), and discovering that for a given object, they are proportional.

In 1880, the French government awarded Bell the Volta Prize of 50, 000 francs ( approximately US $ 10, 000 at that time, about $ in current dollars ) for the invention of the telephone, which he used to found the Volta Laboratory, along with Sumner Tainter and Bell's cousin Chichester Bell.
