In 1969. the Haywood County ( NC ) Volunteer Rescue Squad developed a paramedic program under the medical direction of Ralph Fleicher, MD.

There are 3 rescue squads that serve the county, Callao Volunteer Rescue Squad in Callao, Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad in Heathsville and, Northumberland County Rescue Squad in Reedville.

The EMD Director is also responsible for the County Volunteer Rescue Squad and Awendaw Fire Department.

Police protection is provided by the Thomaston Police Department and fire and emergency medical services are provided by the Thomaston Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Broward County Fire Rescue, the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Volunteer Fire Department, and Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue all providing fire suppression services to the village at some point throughout its history.

The Totowa Fire Department ( TBFD ) is an entirely volunteer fire department and was established in April, 1908 The TBFD consists of four " companies ," which include ; Volunteer Fire Company # 1 ( 1908 ), Lincoln Fire Company ( 1908 ), Riverview Fire Company # 3 ( 1925 ), and Fire Rescue Company # 4 ( 1955 ).

The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad, founded in 1942, is located at the corner of Snyder Avenue and Locust Avenue.

The WFD serves as a back-up EMS agency for the town if the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is not readily available.
