The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1911 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use " SKF " as the trademark for all its bearing products.

This has become a trademark feature of Volvo products ever since.

The day-to-day work is focused upon maintaining the global portfolio of trademark registrations and to extend sufficiently the scope of the registered protection for the Volvo trademarks.

Autocar remained a part of Volvo until 2000, when the trademark was withdrawn from the market, and was subsequently sold to Grand Vehicle Works together with the Xpeditor low cab forward heavy duty product, which remains in production to this day under the Autocar badge, the last vestige of what was once America's leading commercial vehicle producer.

Although technically the property of the White Motor Co., and conveyed to its successor, Volvo-White Motor Co., which evolved into Volvo Trucks North America, the trademark had lain dormant so long that there were no grounds for objection when Daimler-Benz subsidiary Freightliner — whose trucks were distributed by White from the 1950s through 1975 — resurrected it to supplant the Ford blue oval on their HN80 (" AeroMax ") family of trucks after the purchase.

However, the first modern three point seat belt ( the so-called CIR-Griswold restraint ) used in most consumer vehicles today was patented in 1955 ( US Patent 2, 710, 649 ) by the Americans Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven, and developed to its modern form by Nils Bohlin for Swedish manufacturer Volvo — who introduced it in 1959 as standard equipment.

The first car with three point belt was a Volvo PV 544 that was delivered to a dealer in Kristianstad on August 13, 1959.

However, the first car model to feature the three point seat belt as a standard item was the 1959 Volvo 122, first outfitted with a two-point belt at initial delivery in 1958, replaced with the three point seat belt the following year.
