Before switching to 98. 5 HD-2 on August 12, 2009, WBCN ran its rock format for 41 years as an analog radio station on 104. 1 MHz ( now WBMX ).

At 12: 05 a. m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 12, 2009, the station went into a static-like sound, and after a few moments, a voice read the new station identification: " WBMX, WBMX-HD1, Boston " over the " static ".

* WBMX moved all of its subchannels with it from 98. 5 to 104. 1: Mix on analog and HD-1, The 80's Channel on HD-2, and The Sky on HD-3.

Created to act as the resident DJs on Chicago FM radio station ( now defunct ) WBMX ' Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive ' mix show hosted by Armando Rivera, the members quickly established themselves on the radio as the first mix show team of dj's.

The Chicago house music scene exploded with other DJ / Artists who listened to, followed and submitted their tracks for airplay to the Hot Mix 5 members for use in the weekly mix show on WBMX.

His talents earned him spots on WGCI and WBMX, the latter being a somewhat legendary venue for the greatest house DJs of the era.

Eddie then left WGCI for WBMX for a short time and then quit his radio DJ gigs to concentrate on producing.

Inside Radio, a radio industry publication, released information that had this change not taken place, Infinity Broadcasting ( interestingly, the group that was prohibited from owning 93. 7 itself back in the late 1990s, and is now known as CBS Radio ) reportedly would have transformed either WBMX, WZLX, or even WODS into Jack FM on April 15.

On June 10, 2011, WODS began airing " Back to the 80's Friday Nights " with Joe Cortese ( which formerly aired on sister station WBMX ) from 7PM-Midnight every Friday.

The move enabled 105. 7 to pick up a new format, and the station became a 1970s-based oldies station using the WROR call letters that were used on 98. 5 FM under ownership by RKO General Inc. and later American Radio Systems Corp. for years, but flipped to a different format with the WBMX call letters in 1991.

The call letters WBMX ( standing for Black Music EXperience ) were originally assigned to 102. 7 on the FM dial in Oak Park, Illinois ( serving Chicago ) from 1973 to 1988.

A few weeks later, the station took the WBMX call letters from an AM MOR station in Zeeland, Michigan which had been using them since signing on the previous year ; this AM station received the WROR calls in return, but would drop them in 1993.

CBS ' radio stations, including WBMX, were spun off into a new public company, Infinity Broadcasting Corporation, in 1998 ; Viacom announced its acquisition of the publicly-held stake in Infinity on August 15, 2000 ( shortly after it merged with CBS Corporation ), a transaction completed on February 21, 2001 ( though Viacom, and CBS before the merger, had always held a majority stake in Infinity ).

On July 14, 2009, CBS Radio announced that WBMX would move from 98. 5 FM to 104. 1 FM, replacing WBCN ( which signed on in 1958 as a classical music station but had been a rock station since 1968 ); these moves were made to launch a sports talk station, WBZ-FM, at the 98. 5 frequency.

As a result, the station added the "- FM " suffix on July 29, allowing CBS to temporarily place the WBMX call letters on the former WFNA ( 1660 AM ) in Charlotte, North Carolina ; additionally, during " Mix "' s final week on 98. 5, it used the WBZ-FM call letters intended for the new station.

WBCN's programming on 104. 1 ended after midnight on August 12, 2009 ; WBMX then moved to 104. 1 two hours later ( the WBCN call letters were then transferred to the Charlotte station ), with WBZ-FM launching the next day.

WBZ's sports commitment also included the return of the Boston Bruins Radio Network to the station in 1995 ; however, the station lost the New England Patriots to WBCN ( 104. 1 FM, now occupied by WBMX ) starting with the 1995 season, and for several seasons afterward WBZ was an affiliate of the New York Giants Radio Network.

The upper master antenna, manufactured by Electronics Research, Inc. ( ERI ), serves WZLX 100. 7, WBMX 104. 1, WMJX 106. 7, and WXKS-FM 107. 9.

Bad Boy Bill began his DJ career in 1985 during the Chicago House music movement of the mid and late 80's working with Mike " Hitman " Wilson and Julian " Jumpin " Perez of the then WBMX dj mixing team known as the Hot Mix 5.

This station became WBMX.

Doug's next two stops were KDIA in Oakland, CA and WBMX ( now WVAZ ) in Chicago, Illinois.

They were originally a black owned radio station and by the mid 1970s they were known as WBMX and an urban contemporary featuring soul hits, dance music and contemporary jazz.

WBMX has been based out of this studio building in Brighton, Massachusetts | Brighton, shared with CBS ' other Boston FM stations, since 2009.

At the same time, the move also allows sister station WBMX to adjust their Adult Top 40 direction.

Through the years the battle between WBMX, now WVAZ, and WGCI was the stuff of urban legends.
