The line from San Francisco, California, to Toledo, Ohio, was completed in 1909, consisting of the Western Pacific Railway, Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the Wabash Railroad.

Beyond Toledo, the planned route would have used the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad ( 1900 ), Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway, Little Kanawha Railroad, West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway, Western Maryland Railroad and Philadelphia and Western Railway, but the Panic of 1907 strangled the plans before the Little Kanawha section in West Virginia could be finished.

The first trains to run in Warren County operated on portions of the Toledo, Wabash and Western Railway ( later the Wabash Railroad ) in 1856.

The Wabash Cannonball was a passenger train that ran on the Wabash Railroad between Detroit, Michigan and Saint Louis, Missouri, starting in 1949.

The first railroad through the county was the Toledo, Wabash and Western Railway ( later the Wabash Railroad ) which was built from the east across the northern part of the county and reached Attica in 1856 ; it continued west through Warren County and reached the Illinois state line the following year.

The village became a stop on the railway, later named the Wabash Railroad, becoming the center of agriculture in eastern Champaign County.

The Wabash Railroad went from Chicago to St. Louis.

Both were attempting to attract a station on the new Fairbury Pontiac and Northwestern Railroad, which eventually became part of the Wabash Railroad.

Success came when the Wabash Railroad, which was constructed through Forrest in 1880.

The park also contains the former Wabash Railroad station and a restored Norfolk & Western Railroad caboose.

The Railroad eventually became part of the Wabash system.

Symerton was served by the Wabash Railroad.

In the mid-1850s, two large railway lines converged on the Indiana-Illinois state line – the narrow-gauge Toledo, Wabash and Western Railway ( later the Wabash Railroad ), whose route from the east crossed Warren County and reached the border in October 1856, and the standard-gauge Great Western Railroad, which shortly thereafter reached the state line from the west.

In 1894 local workers supported a strike against the Wabash and many of those who had supported the strike lost their jobs to strikebreakers.

A $ 3. 5 million project to renovate and expand the Wabash Station, a rail depot built in 1910 and converted into the city's transit center in the mid-1980s, was completed in summer of 2007.

Wabash College won the Men's Division III NCAA Championship in 1982 and their 1905 24-0 team was considered World Champions ; DePauw University and Manchester College were Div III National Finalists.

It was initially named " The Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College " but was soon changed as the college solidified.

Although Mills, like many of the founders, was a Presbyterian minister, they were committed to the idea that Wabash should be independent and non-sectarian.

He came from a church in New York City and accepted the Presidency even though he knew that Wabash was at that time threatened with bankruptcy.

Joseph F. Tuttle, after whom Tuttle Grade School in Crawfordsville was named in 1906 and Tuttle Middle School in 1960, became President of Wabash College in 1862 and served for 30 years.

During World War II, Wabash College was one of 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which offered students a path to a Navy commission.

Wabash was ranked 53rd among all national liberal arts colleges in the 2011 version of the U. S. News & World Report.

The westernmost Shaker community was located at West Union ( called Busro because it was on Busseron Creek ) on the Wabash River a few miles north of Vincennes in Knox County, Indiana.

The engagement, known as the Battle of the Wabash or as St. Clair's Defeat, was the crowning achievement of Blue Jacket's military career, and the most severe defeat ever inflicted upon the United States by Native Americans.

Once the Erie Canal was opened in 1825, entrepreneurs promoted other canals, including the Miami and Erie Canal and the Wabash and Erie Canal.

It was named for Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Charles Scott, who led the Kentucky Militia at the disastrous Battle of the Wabash in 1791.

The new county was named for Major General Richard Butler, who died at the Battle of the Wabash in 1791.

The Boundary between the two newly created counties was known as Rector's Base Line, from the Wabash River near New Harmony in the west to the Ohio River near Alton in the east.

The county seat of Covington is the second-largest at 2, 565 ; it is also on the Wabash, about downstream and southwest of Attica on U. S. Route 136, just north of Interstate 74.

Van Buren Township, which contains Veedersburg, also includes Stone Bluff ; and Shawnee Township to the north of Van Buren holds the hamlets of Fountain ( on the banks of the Wabash ) and Rob Roy ( at the intersection of U. S. Route 41 and State Road 55 ).

Development in anticipation of completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal, the longest man-made body of water in the western hemisphere, also brought prosperity to the community.

The Wabash Valley region of Ivy Tech Community College, a full-service community college, and Harrison College are also located in the city.

It also spread northward into Indiana along the Wabash, Tippecanoe, and White Rivers.

Fort Vincennes, on the Wabash River, was also an important center.

Because the Wabash post was so remote, however, Vincennes had a hard time getting trade supplies from Louisiana for the native nations, who were also being courted by British traders.

Vincennes is located on the banks of the Wabash River at the western edge of Knox County ; this is also the western edge of the state of Indiana, and Illinois is across the river to the west.

Perhaps more crucial for Indiana's basketball-oriented culture, both the first official basketball game in the state ( Crawfordsville versus Lafayette, March 16, 1894 ) and the first official intercollegiate basketball game ( Wabash versus Purdue, also in 1894 ) occurred at the city's YMCA.

It became a local center for shipping products to New Orleans on flatboats via the Wabash, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers, and it was also able to receive heavy equipment and manufactured items on steamboats.

At the time it also had the Wabash and Tabor & Northern Railroads, which were also having some economic stress.

Lima had also been served by the world-famous Pennsylvania Railroad's " Broadway Limited ," a high speed New York to Chicago service, the " Capital Limited ," Chicago to Washington D. C. service, via Pittsburgh, the Nickel Plate Road's " City of St. Louis ," and " Wabash Cannonball ," and the Erie Lackawanna's " Lake Cites ," which serviced New York, Cleveland, and Chicago with direct service both ways.

The Wabash River also starts near the city.

Butler was named for Maj. Gen. Richard Butler, who fell at the Battle of the Wabash, also known as St. Clair's Defeat, in western Ohio in 1791.

While living in Harrisburg, Lewis also published the popular poem, " St. Clair's Defeat ," which described the defeat of Arthur St. Clair by the tribes of the Western Confederacy during the Battle of the Wabash.

Both applications were considerably narrowed and weakened by the decision in Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railway Company v. Illinois ( also known as the Wabash Case ).

This was the Canada Air Line Railway, and was also used by the Wabash Railway.
