Excavations were resumed at the Walcott Quarry by the Geological Survey of Canada under the persuasion of trilobite expert Harry Blackmore Whittington, and a new quarry, the Raymond, was established about 20 metres higher up Fossil Ridge.

The curator of invertebrate palaeontology, Desmond Collins, identified a number of additional outcrops, stratigraphically both higher and lower than the original Walcott quarry.

On January 9, 1872, Walcott married Lura Ann Rust, daughter of the owner of a farm in New York where Walcott made one of his most important trilobite discoveries ( Walcott-Rust quarry ).

At the start of the 20th century, American paleontologist Charles Walcott noticed differences in early Paleozoic benthic trilobites of Laurentia ( such as Olenellidae, the so called " Pacific fauna "), as found in Scotland and western Newfoundland and those of Baltica ( such as Paradoxididae, often called the " Atlantic fauna "), as found in the southern parts of the British Isles and eastern Newfoundland.

The Nobel Prize-Winning candidate Derek Walcott had withdrawn his candidacy, after The Sunday Times and Cherwell revealed that various Oxford academics had been sent, anonymously, photocopied pages from The Lecherous Professor, a University of Illinois publication on the prevalence of sexual harassment in American universities, describing two such cases laid against Walcott at Harvard University and Boston University.

Describing the fossils was a vast task, pursued by Walcott until his death in 1927.

Complete body fossils have been formally described from the Lower Cambrian Maotianshan shales of Yunnan, China ( Eognathacantha ercainella Chen & Huang and Protosagitta spinosa Hu ) and the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia ( Oesia disjuncta Walcott ).

They were originally described by Walcott as separate fossils under the genus name Helenia, ( Walcott's wife was named Helena and his daughter Helen ); Runnegar adopted the name helen when they were recognized as part of the hyolith organism.

Charles Doolittle Walcott found in the Burgess Shale nine almost complete fossils of Opabinia regalis and a few of what he classified as Opabinia media, and published a description of all of these in 1912.

Walcott thought he saw three buccal spines in the fossils, and therefore categorized Amiskwia as a chaetognath worm ( arrow worm ).
