This explains that road signs in Flanders are written in Dutch, even when referring to a Walloon region, and conversely, which can be confusing for foreigners who do not know the different translations of Flemish or Walloon cities in the other language.

The division into political regions does not correspond with the language-group division: " Vlaanderen " ( Flanders ), " la région wallonne " ( Walloon region, including the German community but generally called Wallonia ), and the bilingual ( French-Dutch ) Brussels region, also the federal capital of Belgium.

The criterion to belong to the Flemish or Walloon language area was the a threshold of 50 %; whereas with a threshold of 30 % the municipal authorities had to offer services in the minority language as well.

Most Frankish words with the phoneme w, changed it to gu when entering Old French and other Romance languages ; however, the northern langue d ' oïl dialects such as Picard, Northern Norman, Walloon, Burgundian, Champenois and Bas-Lorrain retained the or turned it into.

With the reform in 1993 making Belgium into a federal state, Brabant became part of all three regions: the Brussels, Flemish and Walloon Region.

At present, Belgium is a federation with two different divisions of authority: there is a Belgian Federal Government, the territory is divided into three Communities on a linguistic basis ( Flemish, Walloon and German-speaking ), and concurrent with this division also exists another one, the Regions ( Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region ).

There it follows North Shore Drive into the town of Walloon Lake.

It is divided into 9 regional league systems ( one for each province, but Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant are merged and contain also the football teams from the Brussels Capital Region ).
