Formerly known as " Lawrence Welk Village ," the Welk Resort and Champagne Village are just off Interstate 15 north of Escondido, California, about 38 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Stevens returned to Branson, Missouri once again in mid September to kick off a nearly month-long engagement at The Welk Resort which ran through October 23.

The same year, he began producing The Lawrence Welk Show on KTLA in Los Angeles, where it was broadcast from the Aragon Ballroom in Venice Beach.

During its first year on the air, the Welk hour instituted several regular features.

Welk was not pleased with Freberg's parody ( a hit single that year ) and denied he ever used the phrase " Wunnerful!

In 1934, one year after Hitler ’ s Machtergreifung, Welk, under the pseudonym Thomas Trimm, wrote an open letter in the Grüne Post titled Auf ein Wort, Herr Minister, in which he criticised Nazi press censorship under Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels.

In Spring 2004, Carbon Leaf signed with Vanguard Records, part of the Welk Music Group and in July of that year released their album, Indian Summer.

Other niche programs such as The Lawrence Welk Show ( which targeted older audiences ) and Soul Train ( a black-oriented program ) also rose to prominence in syndication during the era.

During the show's peak in popularity, Hee Haw often competed in syndication against The Lawrence Welk Show, a long-running ABC program which had also been canceled in 1971, also in an attempt to purge the networks of older demographic-leaning programs.

Like Hee Haw, Lawrence Welk was picked up for syndication in the fall of 1971, and there were some markets where the same station aired both programs.

( The success of Hee Haw and Lawrence Welk in syndication, and the network decisions that led to their respective cancellations, were the inspiration for a novelty song called " The Lawrence Welk-Hee Haw Counter-Revolution Polka ," performed by Clark ; the song became a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in the fall of 1972.

The song was also sung at Bush's 2005 inauguration by Guy Hovis, former cast member of The Lawrence Welk Show.

Lawrence Welk ( March 11, 1903 – May 17, 1992 ) was an American musician, accordionist, bandleader, and television impresario, who hosted The Lawrence Welk Show from 1955 to 1982.

In 1996, Welk was ranked # 43 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.

Welk was born in the German-speaking community of Strasburg, North Dakota.

A common misconception is that Welk did not learn English until he was 21.

Welk thus acquired his trademark accent, typical of these Plattdeutsch or Low German-speaking immigrants who usually spoke the language at home long after they began to learn English at school.

On his 21st birthday, having fulfilled his promise to his father, Welk left the family farm to pursue a career in music, which he loved.

During the 1930s, Welk led a traveling big band that specialized in dance tunes and " sweet " music.

Welk described his band's sound, saying " We still play music with the champagne style, which means light and rhythmic.

In 1944 and 1945, Welk led his orchestra in many motion picture " Soundies ," considered to be the early pioneers of music videos.

Welk collaborated with Western artist Red Foley to record a version of Spade Cooley's " Shame on You " in 1945.

In 1951, Welk settled in Los Angeles.

Eventually, in 2003 they entered into a joint venture deal with the InterContinental Hotels Group to run the existing Burswood Resort Hotel ( to be re-branded as Burswood InterContinental Hotel ) and a new, 291-room Holiday Inn hotel to be constructed adjacent to the Burswood Theatre.
