The IWW, also known as the Wobblies, differed from the AFL in significant ways:

Due to frequent picketing by Wobblies, these workers have received significant compensation from their former employers.

The " Wobblies " as they were commonly known, gained particular prominence from their incendiary and revolutionary rhetoric.

AFL union " bosses " were ( and still are ) referred to by the Wobblies as " piecards ," a term that may have been borrowed from the itinerant workers – the hoboes – who filled the ranks of the IWW, had a particularly rich lingo that contributed significantly to Wobbly slang, and described anyone with money as a piecard.

Local Wobblies were active in the union from at least 1914.

The men threw out the Wobblies inside and forcibly removed them from the downtown area.

Some local residents claimed that this action was in response to ongoing provocations by the Wobblies and the general desire to remove seditious elements from the town.

The American Legion counters by pointing out what they believe is the incriminating coincidence that Grimm and McElfresh were the first two men killed by the Wobblies and both were shot in the street over 100 feet away from the Roderick on the north side of Second Street on Tower Avenue.

Wobblies also played a role in the sit-down strikes and other organizing efforts by the United Auto Workers in the 1930s, particularly in Detroit, though they never established a strong union presence there.

Five other men who testified in defense of the Wobblies were also fined by the court and subjected to the same torture and humiliations at the hands of the Knights of Liberty.

In the 1960s, the American folk music revival in the United States brought a renewed interest in the songs of Joe Hill and other Wobblies, and seminal folk revival figures such as Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie had a pro-Wobbly tone, while some were members of the IWW.

In 1917 Chaplin and some 100 other Wobblies were rounded up, convicted, and jailed under the Espionage Act for conspiring to hinder the draft and encourage desertion.

He wrote admiringly about the Wobblies, and the perceived injustice in the criminal convictions of Sacco and Vanzetti, and joined with other notable personalities in the United States and Europe in a failed campaign to overturn their death sentences.

The ramifications of this event included a trial that attracted national media attention, notoriety that contributed to the Red Scare of 1919-20, the creation of a powerful martyr for the IWW, a monument to one side of the battle and a mural for the other, a formal tribute to the fallen Legionnaires by President Warren G. Harding, and a deep-rooted enmity between the local American Legion and the Wobblies that persisted into the 21st century.

On November 5, 1916 at Everett, Washington a group of deputized businessmen led by Sheriff Donald McRae attacked Wobblies on the steamer Verona, killing at least five union members ( six more were never accounted for and probably were lost in Puget Sound ).

Eugene Victor " Gene " Debs ( November 5, 1855 – October 20, 1926 ) was an American union leader, one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW or the Wobblies ), and several times the candidate of the Socialist Party of America for President of the United States.

Employees that he fired joined the Wobblies union which organized a boycott of the restaurant.

During the following decade, Gompers and his unions vigorously fought the Wobblies, and later cooperated with widespread government arrests of union leaders for the IWW's militant opposition to the First World War.

Seventeen Wobblies in Tulsa were beaten by a mob and driven out of town.

However, the golden age of the Wobblies ' militant strikes had already passed by the beginning of the thirties, and only the emerging unemployed movement again gave the IWW a brief regional development.

( The name is a joke inspired by the Industrial Workers of the World, " the Wobblies ").

Whether the result of unwillingness to compromise by the Wobblies, the American Legion, or most likely both groups, Smith ’ s mediation efforts failed.

McElfresh was then shot by John Doe Davis, one of the few Wobblies never to be captured, as he waited his turn outside.

Strong was hired as a stringer by the New York Evening Post to report on the bloody conflict between the IWW ( or " Wobblies ") and the army of armed guards hired by Everett mill owners to keep them out of town.
