April – August: The Woodhead Commission reverses the Peel Commission's findings, considers two alternative partition plans, known as Plan B ( map ) and Plan C ( map ), and reports in November that partition was impracticable.

" In fact the report of the Woodhead Commission on the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab State was presented to the British parliament and published on November 9th, the very day of the Kristallnacht.

A technical committee known as the Woodhead Commission concluded in 1938 that partition could not be implemented because neither the Jews nor the Arabs wanted it.

The British government sent a technical team called the Woodhead Commission to detail the plan.

The Woodhead Commission in the end concluded that the partition was impractical.

The British responded to the outbreaks of violence with the Haycraft Commission of Inquiry ( 1921 ), the Shaw Report ( 1930 ), the Peel Commission of 1936-1937, the Woodhead Commission ( 1938 ) and the White Paper of 1939.

The rejection of the Peel Commission's proposal by both parties led to the establishment of the Woodhead Commission, which rejected the non-applicable proposal of the Peel Commission.

Following the publication of the Woodhead Commission report in 1938, the plan for partition was declared unimplementable.

In January 1938, the Woodhead Commission explored the practicalities of partition, proposing that the Jewish state be substantially smaller and include only the coastal plain.

The Woodhead Commission ( officially the Palestine Partition Commission ) was a committee established by the British Government during the British Mandate to examine the technical aspects of implementing the partition of Palestine as proposed by the Peel Commission and suggest possible modifications.

The Commission comprised Sir John Woodhead, a former civil administrator in India ; Sir Alison Russell, a lawyer ; Percival Waterfield and Thomas Reid, also Indian civil servants.

No Arabs came forward to submit evidence, though King Abdullah of Transjordan wrote to Woodhead giving support for partition as well as receiving the Commission in Amman.

The attempt of the Woodhead Commission to include the fewest number of Arabs in Jewish areas and vice versa led to plans that were not viable.

The report of the Woodhead commission was presented to Parliament and published on November 9, 1938.

Wool was transported along the turnpike road ( 1731 ) that ran from Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Mottram, Woodhead and Lady's Cross to Sheffield, to be woven on hand-looms in the dale.

The Woodhead Line, which followed the river from Hadfield to the Woodhead Tunnel portal, was an important cross-Pennine route built in 1844 by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway.

In 1967, at the time of the first public inquiry there were discussions regarding an extension of the motorway across the Peak District National Park It was to provide a second motorway link across the Pennines to the south of the planned M62 and avoid the Snake and Woodhead passes, which are often closed in snowy weather.

The motorway would then have run around the side of Bottoms Reservoir to reach Hadfield, from which the trackbed of the Woodhead railway line ( the former intercity route between Manchester and Sheffield, now closed ) was to have been followed up the Longdendale valley to Woodhead.

A branch off the Woodhead Line was built up the valley to serve the steel works from a junction near Deepcar Station.

The branch line still exists but the main Woodhead line to Manchester was shut.

The Woodhead Tunnel was such a difficult undertaking, that George Stephenson claimed that it could not be done, declaring that he would eat the first locomotive that got through the tunnel.

It was estimated that the mortality amongst the navvies at the Woodhead Tunnel was just over 3 per cent, whereas the mortality amongst soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo was only 2. 11 per cent.

Halcrow was also instrumental in persuading the UK government to set up a hydraulics research laboratory at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, while his colleagues were designing railway tunnels at Potters Bar ( 1955 ) and the earlier Woodhead Tunnel ( 1954 ) and starting work on the new Victoria Line underground line beneath central London.

The town was formerly served by the Woodhead Line which ran between Manchester ( Piccadilly ), Hadfield and Sheffield ( Victoria ) via the Woodhead Tunnel.

The Woodhead Line through Penistone was the first main line railway in the UK to be electrified, but its once-pioneering 1500 V dc system was ultimately to become non-standard.

At the time of the Beeching review, the line was running in competition with the recently modernised route through the Woodhead Tunnel, and its closure was suggested.

In the same year the electric telegraph which had been used in the Woodhead Tunnel was extended across the network – and a contract was signed by " Messres.

Some lines not recommended for closure were, however, eventually closed, such as the Woodhead Line between Manchester and Sheffield in 1981, after the freight traffic ( most notably coal ) on which it had relied, declined.

Plans did exist for the line to be extended up the valley and then tunnel under Black Hill to join the Sheffield to Manchester line near Woodhead.

In English composition he met greater success ; in 1687 he published An Answer to some Considerations, the Spirit of Martin Luther and the Original of the Reformation, a reply to Obadiah Walker, who, when elected master of University College, Oxford in 1676, had printed in a press set up by him there an attack on the Reformation written by Abraham Woodhead.

It then crosses the Peak District, heading up the Longdendale valley via the Longdendale Trail to Woodhead, then down through Dunford Bridge and Penistone, Doncaster, Selby, Hessle, Hull and Hornsea.

The road running up to Woodhead Farm is known locally as The Pit Brae, as it provided access to the colliery.

The Longdendale Chain of reservoirs comprises three impounding reservoirs, Woodhead Reservoir, Torside Reservoir and Rhodeswood Reservoir, supplying of water a day by gravity to Manchester and Salford, and to Hyde and Denton through the Mottram tunnel.
