By mid-century, the Woodside area had a dozen mills producing building materials for a booming San Francisco.

The Woodside Fire District is a special district serving Woodside, Portola Valley and unincorporated areas including Ladera, Los Trancos Woods, Vista Verde, Emerald Lake, Menlo Park ( Unincorporated ) and Skyline / State Route 35 area.

At the time it was incorporated, the township covered ( almost four times its current area of ) and included several municipalities which were formed from portions of Bloomfield during the course of the nineteenth century, including Belleville ( created on April 8, 1839 ), Montclair ( April 15, 1868 ), Woodside Township ( March 24, 1869 ) and Glen Ridge ( February 13, 1895 ).

The ring road plan also called for a motorway out from the centre of the city to the north-west ( as the ring road plan would have involved four motorways running off of the central ring-a northeast one, which is the M8 from Glasgow city centre to Edinburgh ; a southwest one, which is the M8 from Glasgow city centre to Greenock ; a southeast one, the projected M74 extension ; and a northwest one, which would have left the Inner Ring Road at Woodside ( slip road stubs are visible ) and followed the path of the Forth & Clyde Canal up through the Maryhill area of Glasgow to Milngavie and beyond ).

It is a mostly residential area, although it also contains two large hospitals: Coppets Wood Hospital to the north, which is the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit of the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust, and St Lukes Woodside Hospital to the south.

The north-western part of the area, which can also be regarded as the part of Totteridge in N12 rather than N20, is sometimes called Woodside Park Garden Suburb and consists of semi-detached or detached 3 to 4 bedroom houses built in the 1950s.

Woodside Primary is linked with a school in Nepal, through the charity Gorkha Learning for Life, which was founded by a member of school staff.

In 1849, during the California Gold Rush, 20-year-old Mathias Alfred Parkhurst purchased of timberland and named it “ Woodside "; of course, this name was kept.
