Many concepts once thought to be analogous, such as the Chinese Wu Xing, are now understood more figuratively.

The Wu Xing are chiefly an ancient mnemonic device for systems with five stages ; hence the preferred translation of " movements ", " phases " or " steps " over " elements.

Among the most famous Emperors are Qin Shi Huang of the Qin Dynasty, Emperors Gaozu and Wu of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Kublai Khan of the Yuan Dynasty, the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty and the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty.

Gao Lishi () ( 684 – 762 ), formally the Duke of Qi ( 齊公 ), was a eunuch official of the Chinese dynasty Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian's Zhou Dynasty, becoming particularly powerful during Emperor Xuanzong of Tang's reign.

In 698, a local official, Li Qianli ( 李千里 ), submitted two young eunuchs to Wu Zetian, who had by that point taken the throne as " emperor ," as tribute ; one was Lishi ( who had not yet taken the name of Gao at this point ), and one was named Jin ' gang ( 金剛 ).

As a civil official, he was successful in integrating northern refugees and minorities into the social and economic structure of Eastern Wu.

In the Battle of Shiting, Zhou Fang, a provincial official feigned defection to Wei, luring a large Wei army commanded by Cao Xiu deep into Wu territory.

The main beneficiaries of this policy were those with access to copper, including the court official Deng Tong ( 鄧通 ) ( see also below ), to whom Emperor Wen had given a major copper mine in Yandao ( 嚴道, in modern Yaan, Sichuan ), and Liu Pi, the Prince of Wu, whose principality had a major copper mine at Yuzhang ( 豫章, in modern Nanchang, Jiangxi ).

For reasons unknown, her assistant Liu Shu ( 劉儵 ) recommended Marquess Hong, and after consulting with her father Dou Wu and the Confucian scholar official Chen Fan, Empress Dowager Dou made him emperor, at age 12.

After the fall of Eastern Wu, Emperor Wu ordered that provincial governors no longer be in charge of military matters and become purely civilian governors, and that regional militias be disbanded, despite opposition by the general Tao Huang ( 陶璜 ) and the key official Shan Tao.

His official Gongsun Huo ( 公孫獲 ) was able to persuade Liu Wu, the Prince of Liang, that Liu Zhi had only pretended to join the rebellion and had in fact contributed to the rebellion's defeat.

Later in 299, the mid-level official Jiang Tong ( 江統 ) would petition Empress Jia to have the five non-Han ethnicities ( the Wu Hu ) removed from the empire proper and relocated to regions outside the empire, but Empress Jia did not accept his suggestions.

However, Empress Jia and Jia Wu opposed this, and instead married a daughter of the official Wang Yan ( 王衍 ) to Crown Prince Yu.

He was the first official diplomat to bring back reliable information about Central Asia to the Chinese imperial court, then under Emperor Wu of Han, and played an important pioneering role in the Chinese colonization and conquest of the region now known as Xinjiang.
