This originally was the Georgia and North Carolina border all the way back to the Mississippi River, until Tennessee was divided from North Carolina, and the Yazoo companies induced the legislature of Georgia to pass an act, approved by the governor in 1795, to sell the greater part of Georgia's territory presently comprising Alabama and Mississippi.

It is named for the Yazoo River, whose name, legend has it, comes from an Indian word meaning " River of Death.

The first Europeans who settled the area were French colonists, who built Fort-Saint-Pierre in 1719 on the high bluffs overlooking the Yazoo River at present-day Redwood.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers diverted the Yazoo River in 1903 into the old, shallowing channel to rejuvenate the waterfront.

Vicksburg is located at the confluence of the Mississippi River and Yazoo River.

During the American Civil War, a makeshift shipyard was established on the Yazoo River at Yazoo City after the Confederate loss of New Orleans.

It originated in the Mississippi Delta, a region of the United States that stretches from Memphis, Tennessee in the north to Vicksburg, Mississippi in the south, Helena, Arkansas in the west to the Yazoo River on the east.

The town was established on an old stagecoach line and was for many years the main trading center of Yazoo County, including a large part of Madison County east of the Big Black River.

The Confederates evacuated Hayne's Bluff, which was occupied by Sherman's cavalry on May 19, and Union steamboats no longer had to run the guns of Vicksburg, now being able to dock by the dozens up the Yazoo River.

Loess soil forms sharp hills east of the Mississippi River and Yazoo River in western Mississippi north and south of Vicksburg.

In 1764, the British moved the northern boundary to the 32 ° 22 ′ north latitude, extending from the Yazoo to the Chattahoochee River, which included the Natchez District and the Tombigbee District.

They had moved the boundary from the 31st degree latitude northwards to a line drawn due east from the junction of the Yazoo River and the Mississippi, the present day location of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The Yazoo lands were the sparsely-populated central and western areas of the U. S. state of Georgia, when its western border stretched back to the Mississippi River.

Yazoo River Basin

The area which is now Yazoo County was acquired by the State of Mississippi from the Choctaw Indians in 1820.

Yazoo County was established on January 21, 1823.

In 1849 the county seat was moved once again, to Yazoo City where it remains.

Yazoo County was a battlefield in 1863 and 1864 during the American Civil War.

Jerry attended Mississippi State University, and was employed by the Mississippi Chemical Company of Yazoo City ; he died shortly after building a new home in Amite County.

Coahoma County was established February 9, 1836, and is located in the northwestern part of the state in the fertile Yazoo Delta region.

At the Yazoo settlements in Mississippi he was joined by Jean Benjamin who became the scientist for the expedition.

U. S. Route 49 ( part of which was formerly U. S. 49E ) through Yazoo City is named Jerry Clower Boulevard, after the famous comedian, a former resident of Yazoo City.

The community now known as Yazoo City was founded in 1824.

The town was later renamed Manchester then changed to Yazoo City in 1839.

The shipyard was destroyed by Union forces in 1863, then Yazoo City fell back into Confederate hands.

The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 did much damage to the entire Delta, but Yazoo City was restored and is now protected by an effective flood prevention system.

At approximately 8: 05 pm local time ( Central ), Yazoo City was struck by two tornadoes: first, an EF-2 tornado three miles southwest of town, then a second EF-2 within the city limits, causing significant damage to several downtown buildings.

It was revealed that the Yazoo Land Act sale to private speculators had been approved in return for bribes and after the scandal was exposed, voters rejected most of the incumbents in the next election, and the next legislature, reacting to the public outcry, repealed the law and voided transactions made under it.

Formed in late 1981 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke ( synthesizer ) and Alison Moyet ( vocals ), Yazoo was signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom and ( as " Yaz ") to Sire Records in the United States.

It was named for the Yazoo tribe of Native Americans.

Several other places and things were named Yazoo, either for or along with the lands.

He encouraged the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad to come into the area by giving the railroad company, without cost, the right-of-way through his plantation plus of land.

The Town of Bentonia is served by the Yazoo County School District.

The Village of Eden is served by the Yazoo County School District.

The Village of Satartia is served by the Yazoo County School District.

The new highway makes the town of Carter so near that it might be considered for annexation by Yazoo City in a few years.

Yazoo was formed in late 1981 by Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet in Basildon, Essex, England.

Yazoo was renamed Yaz for the US market because the name was already in use by a small American rock band.

A compilation entitled Only Yazoo — The Best of was released in 1999 and was preceded by a re-release of Yazoo's debut single, " Only You ", featuring a new remix of the title track and several more of " Don't Go ".

He said he'd been asked by New York based DJ Andy Butler to join the project and that the objective was or became " Let's sound as much like Yazoo as we can .... We loved Yazoo.

Yazoo wrapped up the final two dates of the US tour by returning to New York City for the first time since October 1982.

Clarke then teamed up with singer Alison Moyet ( at the time known by the nickname of ' Alf ') to form the popular synthpop band Yazoo ( known as Yaz in the U. S .), which produced two albums and a string of hits including " Only You ", " Don't Go ", " Situation ", " The Other Side of Love ", " Nobody's Diary " and " Walk Away from Love ".
