The grant, which stretched southward to Lake Traverse -- the headwaters of the Red -- was made in May, 1811, and by October of that year a small group of Scots was settling for the winter at York Factory on Hudson Bay.

Seven hundred miles south of York Factory, at `` the Forks '' of the Red and the Assiniboine, twenty-three men located a settlement in August 1812.

The notes, denominated in pounds sterling, were printed in London and issued at the York Factory, Fort Garry and the Red River Colony.

In 1821 the North West Company was forcibly merged ( at the behest of the British government ) into the Hudson's Bay Company after armed conflict in the Red River Colony between the two companies. George Simpson, director of Hudson's Bay Company, visited the Columbia District in 1824-25, journeying from York Factory.

This route was thereafter followed by the York Factory Express brigades.

By 1825 there were usually two brigades, each setting out from opposite ends of the route, Fort Vancouver in the Columbia District on the lower Columbia River and the other from York Factory on Hudson Bay, in spring and passing each other in the middle of the continent.

They used most of the York Express route through northern Canada.

From 1821 – 1846, the Hudson's Bay Company twice annually used the York Factory Express overland trade route from Fort Vancouver to Hudson Bay then on to London.

Other ways to get to Oregon were: using the York Factory Express route across Canada, and down the Columbia River ; ships from Hawaii, San Francisco, or other ports that stopped in Oregon ; emigrants trailing up from California, etc .. All provided a trickle of emigrants, but they were soon overwhelmed in numbers by the emigrants coming over the Oregon Trail.

Throughout the period of dispute and up to the creation of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858, the Hudson's Bay Company's York Factory Express route, as well the route of fur brigades, followed the Okanogan River along the east edge of the Cascades and the Columbia River through the range.
