On Ilkla Moor Baht ' at ( Standard English: On Ilkley Moor without a hat ) is a popular folk song from Yorkshire, England.

The first published version of the words appeared in 1916, when it was described as " a dialect song which, for at least two generations past, has been sung in all parts of the West Riding of Yorkshire ".

Yorkshire folk song lacked the unique instrumental features of folk in areas like Northumbria and was chiefly distinguished by the use of dialect, particularly in the West Riding and exemplified by the song ‘ On Ilkla Moor Baht ' at ’, probably written in the later 19th century and using a Kent folk tune ( almost certainly borrowed via a Methodist hymnal ), but often seen as an unofficial Yorkshire anthem.

Most Yorkshire folk songs were not unique and tended to be adapted to fit local geography and dialect, as was the case with probably the most commercially successful Yorkshire song, ‘ Scarborough Fair ’, recorded by Simon & Garfunkel, which was a version of the Scottish ballad ‘ The Elfin Knight ’.

' Iron Wheels ' was released as a single, the song was written about and dedicated to Byford's father who worked in the coal mines of Yorkshire.

The particular clock, in the song, was found in North Yorkshire, England at the George Hotel, where it still stands today.

The song is written in an old form of the Yorkshire dialect of Northern English.

The tune later became associated with the Yorkshire song " On Ilkla Moor Baht ' at ".

In the United Kingdom: the school song of the old Brewood Grammar School for boys, Netherthorpe School, Colyton Grammar School, Dover Grammar School, Woodford County High School in Essex, Beverley Grammar School in East Yorkshire, Bolton School, Manchester Grammar School, High Storrs Grammar School, Sheffield, the now defunct Salford Grammar School, the former Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, Leicester ( succeeded by Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College ) and Harrow School's affiliated school, The John Lyon School.

When passing through the local station in the Yorkshire town of Ilkley, drivers soon began to play the first line of the folk song, " On Ilkla Moor Baht ' at " on their loco / DMU horns, using a series of short blasts: LOW, h-i-g-h high high, LOW, high, until the practice was stopped by authorities.

The depopulation of Fitzwilliam, West Yorkshire which saw around a third of its housing left unoccupied, was brought into culture by a song by Chumbawamba and David Peace's novel Nineteen Seventy Four.

In 1987, Skellern wrote and performed the theme music and song for the Yorkshire Television series Flying Lady.

Their use is also attested in a knitting song from Yorkshire.

The song was inspired by the George Hotel, a wayfarers ' inn in Piercebridge on the border of Yorkshire and County Durham.
