The first commercial computer with floating point hardware was Zuse's Z4 computer designed in 1942 – 1945.

Work on the Z4 could not continue in the extreme privation of post-war Germany, and it was not until 1949 that he was able to resume work on it.

While working on his Z4 computer, Zuse realised that programming in machine code was too complicated.
