Eamon Everall, founder member of the Stuckism art movement is a long-time resident in the borough where he also maintains a studio.

The borough originally had several civil parishes or parts of parishes within it but these were all merged into a single civil parish of Carlisle in 1904.

The borough is immediately to the west of the City of Westminster, which is at the heart of modern London, and to the east of Hammersmith & Fulham, and itself contains a substantial number of city centre facilities such as major museums and universities ( in " Albertopolis "), department stores like Harrods, Peter Jones and Harvey Nichols, is home to the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest carnival, and several Embassies in its Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Kensington Gardens districts.

There are also several busy roads that run through the borough such as the A1 and A406.

The borough also has several stops on the London Tramlink network.

The borough is also served by several London Tramlink stops from Wimbledon, that goes to Croydon, New Addington, Elmers End and Beckenham.

The charter of King John ( 1208 ), which gave his burgesses of Yarmouth general liberties according to the customs of Oxford, a gild merchant and weekly hustings, was amplified by several later charters asserting the rights of the borough against Little Yarmouth and Gorleston.

With the annexation of Nieuw Amsterdam by the English in 1664 came a nearly instant increase in immigration to the region and the development of several settlements in and around the present borders of the borough.

The borough is mostly vacation and year-round homes with a single night club, a miniature golf course and several marinas.

In 1987, torrential rains over a period of several days caused Hay Creek to flood Pennsylvania Route 82, which ran through the borough, and washed out several bridges.

The borough of Hollidaysburg was first laid out in 1796 and was named after Adam and William Holliday, Irish immigrants who founded the settlement ; by 1814 it consisted of several houses and a tavern.

Newtown Township, which surrounds the borough, has a system of walking trails that lead to the borough in several places.

Policy on buying and stocking Blyton's books by British public libraries drew attention in newspaper reports from the early 1960s to the end of the 1970s, as local decisions were made by a London borough, Birmingham, Nottingham and other central libraries.

More than 35 other branch libraries are located in the borough.

Public libraries in the borough include Askew Road Library, Barons Court Library, Fulham Library, Hammersmith Library, Sands End Library, and Shepherds Bush Library.

The Belmar Public Library, one of New Jersey's original thirty-six Carnegie libraries is in need of repairs and may be consolidated into the town's borough hall, and possibly join the Monmouth County Library system.

Norwich lays claims to being the first municipality to adopt the Public Libraries Act 1850 ( which allowed any municipal borough with a population of 100, 000 or more to introduce a halfpenny rate to establish public libraries — although not to buy books ), but theirs was the eleventh library to open, in 1857, being the eleventh in the country after Winchester, Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, Kidderminster, Cambridge, Birkenhead and Sheffield.

There are 58 neighborhood branches throughout the borough, of which many are Carnegie libraries.

$ 240, 000 donated by Andrew Carnegie was used for the construction of seven new Carnegie libraries between 1904 and 1924 in the most heavily — populated areas of the borough.

Slaughter worked for the British Safety Council, a charity based in Hammersmith Broadway, and for Hammersmith & Fulham Council in libraries around the borough and at Fulham Town Hall.

The borough also includes RAF Northolt and the former sites of RAF Eastcote, RAF South Ruislip, RAF West Drayton, RAF West Ruislip and RAF Uxbridge.

Within the borough of Hillingdon, Eastcote is included with East Ruislip as a ward, with Conservative Councillors Bruce Baker, Catherine Dann and David Payne representing it.
