The Turks, having seized the summit of the mountain, and the French ( both soldiers and pilgrims ) having been taken by surprise, there was little hope of escape: those who tried were caught and killed, and many men, horses and baggage were cast into the canyon below the ridge.

Located at the bottom of the canyon rim below Bahuichivo, on the Urique River.

Lower lakes canyon

Most of the ceramic material found in the main canyon was probably made in the highlands, although it is possible some pottery was manufactured in Lower Glen Canyon.

By 1924, the California Highway Commission's engineers had realized that building Route 50 through the canyon was impractical, and adopted a substitute plan for two highways connecting Lower Lake and Rumsey with the planned Route 15 ( Tahoe-Ukiah Highway, now State Route 20 ) to the north in September 1925.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the first large canyon on the Yellowstone River downstream from Yellowstone Falls in Yellowstone National Park.

Although trappers and prospectors who visited the Yellowstone region had knowledge of the canyon, the first significant descriptions were publicized after the Cook – Folsom – Peterson Expedition of 1869 and the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870.

Today the canyon is still being eroded by the Yellowstone River.

There was a significant amount of consideration given to the idea of running the railroad through the canyon to increase travel between Yellowstone National Park and Bozeman, Montana.

His most successful endeavor in the canyon was a bus route he ran in 1924 from Salesville ( now Gallatin Gateway ) to Yellowstone National Park.

In 1869, the Cook – Folsom – Peterson Expedition encountered the Lamar River ( East Fork ) just upstream from the canyon section flowing into the Yellowstone and traveled upstream to the confluence of Calfee Creek where they camped on September 16, 1869.

During the 1988 fires in Yellowstone National Park, hot embers managed to cross the Lewis Canyon, a natural canyon up to a mile wide and 600 feet ( 180 m ) deep.

Steep forested mountains and cliffs surround it, with Bridal Veil Falls is at the head of the canyon.

The Seneca called the land around this canyon " Seh-ga-hun-da ", the " Vale of the three falls "; the Middle Falls (" Ska-ga-dee ") was believed to be so wondrous it made the sun stop at midday.

The park contains more than 500 waterfalls, including Elabana Falls and Running Creek Falls in the south of the park which falls into a box canyon.

There are several waterfalls within this canyon including Fantastic Falls.

At one point, a hike from the river up a narrow, boxed canyon leads to a waterfall, Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls, the highest of its kind between the Southern Appalachians and the Rockies.

Grand Falls marks the beginning of a deep, jagged canyon that soon turns into a wide valley between low bluffs, before transforming into a gorge for the final time near Cameron.

Ives, would in 1858 again return to the area after navigating a steamboat named the ' Explorer ' up the Colorado from south of Yuma northwards to Blacks Canyon at which point his party went ashore and attempted to go up into the Grand Canyon until the sheer cliffs prevented him from doing so, at which point he left the canyon and proceeded overland and someplace in the vicinity of the Grand Falls also known as the Chocolate falls on the Little Colorado, he picked up the Whipple trail from four years previously.

Past the Falls, the river is in the Driftless Area of Minnesota, a region that remained ice free during the last ice age, allowing the river to carve a very impressive canyon.

A few hundred metres upstream from the Huka Falls, the Waikato River narrows from approximately 100 metres across into a narrow canyon only 15 metres across.

At Nooksack Falls the river flows through a narrow valley and drops freely into a deep rocky river canyon.

Cherokee Falls is from the trailhead ; Hemlock Falls, at the bottom of the canyon, appears at.

Just before picking up Goblin Creek, the river flows through a short but impressive canyon and within that canyon the river drops over Deer Falls.

A short ways down from that, the river flows through an even shorter but very twisted and interestingly shaped canyon at Bear Creek Falls.

Fintry Falls, accessed via a steep stairway, is located in a small canyon where Shorts Creek drops into the town toward the lake.

After the river leaves the canyon it flows into the broad Flathead Valley and arcs southwest, passing Columbia Falls and Kalispell, before joining the Whitefish River and emptying into Flathead Lake, where the Swan River joins.

The river continues northeast through a small canyon for about, therein passing over the Whitemud Falls and Berwick Falls, and takes in the major left tributary Fox River at an elevation of.

The river boasts three major waterfalls: DeSoto Falls, Little River Falls ( at the beginning of the canyon ), and Grace's High Falls.
