This new city council elected Richmond's first black mayor, Henry L. Marsh.

Richmond's only railway station located within the city limits, the historic Main Street Station, was renovated in 2004.

Since all of Richmond's land occupies islands in a river delta, the city has plenty of rich, alluvial soil for agriculture, and was one of the first areas in British Columbia to be farmed by Europeans in the 19th century.

Richmond's 2011 population of 190, 473 makes it the fourth largest city in British Columbia, after Vancouver ( 603, 502 ), Surrey ( 468, 251 ) and Burnaby ( 223, 218 ).

Richmond's amalgamation with the city of Ottawa in 2001 has had mixed results.

The University of Richmond's campus consists of in a suburban setting on the western edge of the city.

At the current location, Armstrong High School is one of only two of Richmond's public schools which are physically located slightly outside the corporate limits of the independent city in the East End.

This highway, along with the construction of Richmond's Downtown Expressway, were large factors in the decline and subsequent decay in many urban areas of the city.

In January 1972 Merhige ruled that students in Henrico and Chesterfield counties in Virginia would have to be bused to the Richmond city schools in order to decrease the high percentage of black students in Richmond's schools.

Downtown, the center of the city, is currently undergoing major redevelopment with new condos, apartments, offices and The Power & Light District ( shopping / entertainment development ) complete with bars, restaurants, a grocery store with a roof-top pool club called The Jones, a performing arts center, and The Sprint Center.

A new university college ( Swedish: högskola ), Malmö University College, was opened in 1998 on Kockums ' former dockside and further redevelopment of the now disused south-western harbor followed ; a city architecture exposition ( Bo01 ) was held in the area in 2001 and its buildings and villas forms the core of a new city district, aimed at the urban middle-class and with attractive waterfront vistas.

However, despite a Woolworths store on its ground floor, a major travel company housed on the floor above, and a restaurant offering fine views over the city on the top floor, the economic situation of the time meant that it would not be followed by more buildings in that vein: no further redevelopment in the immediate vicinity of Potsdamer Platz occurred prior to World War II, and so Columbushaus would always seem out of place in that location.

Similarly, neither East Berlin nor West Berlin regarded their half as a priority area for redevelopment, seeking instead to distance themselves from the traditional heart of the city and develop two new centres for themselves, well away from the troubled border zone.

The Berlin Senate ( city government ) organised a design competition for the redevelopment of Potsdamer Platz and much of the surrounding area.

In recent years, downtown Toledo has undergone significant redevelopment to draw residents back to the city.

The city is also going through careful redevelopment, preparing to become one of the major cities of the Euro-Mediterranean area.

By the 1950s, scores of notable Manhattan buildings were lost to redevelopment around the city, and the mission of MAS broadened to include historical preservation.

The inner city site would then be available for redevelopment, a process that has now begun.

The period of the most significant redevelopment of the city extended from 1971, when the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union adopted a decision " On the measures for further development of the city of Kishinev ", which secured more than one billion rubles in investment from the state budget, which continued until the independence of Moldova in 1991.

In 1993, the city passed a massive redevelopment package known as the Metropolitan Area Projects ( MAPS ), intended to rebuild the city's core with civic projects to establish more activities and life to downtown.

Large scale redevelopment and inner city regeneration has been underway in Leyton for many years, as is also the case in the neighbouring areas of Hackney, Clapton and Stratford.

During the late fifties until the late sixties when Charles de Gaulle ended the American military presence, the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force had an array of military installations in France, including a major Army logistics and communications hub in Poitiers, part of what was called the Communication Zone ( ComZ ), and consisting of a logistics headquarters and communications agency located at Aboville Caserne, a military compound situated on a hill above the city.

The agency noted that MoMA has " superior financial flexibility with over $ 332 million of unrestricted financial resources ," and has had solid attendance and record sales at its retail outlets around the city and online.

In 2010, Nantes was named a hub city for innovation in the Innovation Cities Index by innovation agency, 2thinknow.

After the fall of the tyrants their institutions survived until the end of the 6th century BC, when Dorian supremacy was re-established, perhaps by the agency of Sparta under the ephor Chilon, and the city was enrolled in the Peloponnesian League.

In April 2007, rating agency Standard & Poor's announced that it had raised its long-term issue credit rating for Varna to BB + from BB, declaring the city ’ s outlook " stable " and praising its " improved operating performance ".

The downtown area still retains many turn-of-the-century building stock and is being preserved by the city ’ s development agency as a historic area.

Water service is primarily provided by Palmdale Water District ( separate public agency ) and Los Angeles County Waterworks ( part of the County Public Works ); sewer service is provided by the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County ( separate public agency ); electrical service is provided by Southern California Edison ; natural gas service is provided by Southern California Gas ; cable television service is provided by Time Warner Cable ; telephone service is provided by AT & T and Verizon ; refuse pickup and disposal service is provided by Waste Management, Inc of the Antelope Valley under a franchise agreement with the city.

The small city has been the hometown for a number of noted athletes including Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby, and many major league baseball players, including Andy Messersmith, who challenged baseball's reserve clause and helped established free agency in professional sports.

The primary law enforcement agency in the city is the Panama City Beach Police Department.

With the declaration of Shah Alam's city status on 10 October 2000, the agency was upgraded to a city council status.

The Wichita Police Department, established in 1871, is the city ’ s law enforcement agency.

Over the same period, though, SEMCOG, the local statistics agency of Metro Detroit Council of Governments, has estimated the city to have grown to 99, 001, or an increase of 1. 2 % since 2000.

The East Ridge Police Department maintains public safety within the city and is a full service and state certified agency.

The primary law enforcement agency in the city is the City of Etowah Police Department.

Devaney and the Patton Village city council members closed the Patton Village marshal's office ; that agency served warrants.

Federal agency funding was used to construct a new city hall and library, an improved culinary water system, and a city-wide wastewater collection / disposal system.

The city operates a redevelopment agency ( RDA ), with the city council acting as the RDA governing board and the mayor as its executive director.
