The circumstances preceding the mutiny on the Bounty and Jack London's story " Make Westing " poignantly illustrated the difficulty it caused for mariners seeking to round Cape Horn on the clipper ship route between New York and California.

" It is a waypoint on the clipper route followed by clipper ships to the Far East and Australia, and still followed by several offshore yacht races.

) Historically, the cape has been known to sailors as a major hazard on the traditional clipper route and is sometimes regarded as one of the great capes.

Sir Francis Charles Chichester KBE ( 17 September 1901 – 26 August 1972 ), aviator and sailor, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for becoming the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the clipper route, and the fastest circumnavigator, in nine months and one day overall.

The course is essentially a circumnavigation along the clipper route: from Les Sables d ’ Olonne, down the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope ; then clockwise around Antarctica, keeping Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn to port ; then back to Les Sables d ’ Olonne.

In the programme, the clipper Stad Amsterdam re-traced the route that Charles Darwin took aboard HMS Beagle ( 1831 – 36 ), a journey that played a seminal role in his thinking on evolution.

James ' voyage is notable as she was the first woman to single-handedly sail the clipper route, eastabout and south of the three great capes ; and she completed a fast ( although not without outside assistance ) circumnavigation in just 272 days.

The term " clipper " most likely derives from the verb " clip ", which in former times meant, among other things, to run or fly swiftly.

The first ships to which the term " clipper " seems to have been applied were the Baltimore clippers.

One famous example of the traditional use of metal sheathing is the clipper Cutty Sark, which is preserved as a museum ship in dry-dock at Greenwich in England.

But in 1850 the barque Magdalena ( 377 ton ) was built in Amsterdam, and in 1853 four more ships with clipper lines were launched, of which the iron ship California ( 663 ton ) is the most famous.

The gorge is named after the clipper ship Loch Ard, which ran aground on nearby Muttonbird Island on 1 June 1878 approaching the end of a three-month journey from England to Melbourne.

Henry Grinnell, father of Sylvia and Walton, was a partner in Grinnell, Minturn & Co., owners of the Swallowtail shipping line which included Flying Cloud, in 1851 the fastest clipper ship in the world.

While the first application of the term " clipper " in a nautical sense is by no means certain, it seems to have had an American origin when applied to the Baltimore clippers of the late 18th century.

The Oxford English Dictionary says its earliest quotation for " clipper " is from 1830.

That is except for a small number built in the 1860s, and the last American clipper ship from the East Boston shipyard of Donald McKay in 1869, the Glory of the Seas.

* 1869 – In Dumbarton, Scotland, the clipper Cutty Sark is launched – one of the last clippers ever built, and the only one still surviving today.

* June – The record-setting clipper Flying Cloud is burned for scrap metal.

The ship has become the world's oldest surviving clipper ship of only two that survive-Cutty Sark is the other.

* November 23 – In Dumbarton, Scotland, the clipper ship Cutty Sark is launched ( it is one of the last clippers built, and the only one to survive into the 21st century ).
