Some coelurosaur groups that flourished during the Cretaceous were the tyrannosaurids ( including Tyrannosaurus ) the dromaeosaurids ( including Velociraptor and Deinonychus, which are remarkably similar in form to the oldest known bird, Archaeopteryx ), the bird-like troodontids and oviraptorosaurs, the ornithomimosaurs ( or " ostrich dinosaurs "), the strange giant-clawed herbivorous therizinosaurs, and the avialans, which include modern birds and is the only dinosaur lineage to survive the Cretaceous – Paleogene extinction event.

However, only a few parts were found, primarily a skull and some limb bones which moreover do not well agree in their proportions respective to each other, and this has led many to believe that the Protoavis fossil is chimaeric, made up of more than one organism: the pieces of skull appear like those of a coelurosaur, while most parts of the limb skeleton suggest affinities to ceratosaurs and at least some vertebrae are most similar to those of Megalancosaurus, an avicephalan diapsid:

Feathers of some type, or morphological features suggesting feathers, have been found in fossils of at least one species in all coelurosaur subgroups other than ornithomimosauria.

Although they have been traditionally included in this family, there is no evidence that primitive coelurosaurs like Ornitholestes, Proceratosaurus and Scipionyx form a clade with Coelurus to the exclusion of other traditional coelurosaur families.

All published cladistic analyses have shown Ornitholestes to be a coelurosaur as defined by Gauthier, and likely a primitive member of the advanced group Maniraptora, though there is still disagreement regarding its exact position within this group.

The position of Compsognathus and its relatives within the coelurosaur group is uncertain.

Other possible therizinosaurs include Thecocoelurus, and the Early Jurassic Eshanosaurus, which would be the earliest known coelurosaur if it belongs to this group.

There were probably no predators which could attempt to attack a full-grown Sauroposeidon, but juveniles were likely to be preyed on by the contemporary Acrocanthosaurus atokensis ( a carnosaur slightly smaller than a Tyrannosaurus ) and the small coelurosaur Deinonychus antirrhopus.

As late as 2001, Mark Norell and colleagues analyzed a large survey of coelurosaur fossils and produced the tentative result that dromaeosaurids were most closely related to birds, with troodontids as a more distant outgroup.

A majority of coelurosaur groups became extinct in the Cretaceous – Paleogene extinction event, including the Tyrannosauroidea, Ornithomimosauria, Oviraptorosauria, Deinonychosauria, Enantiornithes, and Hesperornithes.

In New Mexico and Utah, the species P. cyrtocristatus shared its environment with the horned ceratopsians Utahceratops, Kosmoceratops, and Pentaceratops, and the coelurosaur Ornithomimus, and the tyrannosaur Teratophoneus.

Ornitholestes, due to its small size, was therefore generally classified as a coelurosaur.

In 1996, the primitive coelurosaur Sinosauropteryx was discovered in China.

In 2009, researchers hypothesized that smooth-edged holes found in the fossil jaws of tyrannosaurid dinosaurs such as Albertosaurus were caused by a parasite similar to Trichomonas gallinae which infects birds.

The Liaoning lagerstätte ( Chaomidianzi formation ) in China provides a glimpse of life in the Early Cretaceous, where preserved remains of numerous types of small dinosaurs, birds, and mammals have been found.

It is possible that small dinosaurs ( other than birds ) did survive, but they would have been deprived of food as both herbivorous dinosaurs would have found plant material scarce, and carnivores would have quickly found prey in short supply.
