After an earthquake in Japan in 1793 people on the coast at Tugaru were so terrified by the extraordinary ebbing of the sea that they scurried to higher ground.

At twelve minutes after five on the morning of Wednesday, April 18, 1906, San Francisco was shaken by a severe earthquake.

The largest structure ever made from adobe ( bricks ) was the Bam Citadel, which suffered serious damage ( up to 80 %) by an earthquake on December 26, 2003.

* 1998 – An earthquake in Slovenia, measuring 5. 6 on the Richter scale occurs near the town of Bovec.

* 1953 – The islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia in Greece are severely damaged by an earthquake measuring 7. 3 on the Richter scale.

* 1993 – An earthquake measuring 7. 0 on the Richter Scale hits the South Island of New Zealand.

No large earthquake has occurred on the Hayward Fault near Berkeley in historic times ( except possibly in 1836 ), but seismologists warn about the geologic record of large temblors several times in the deeper past, and their current assessment is that a quake of 6. 5 or greater is imminent, sometime within the next 30 years.

The 1868 Hayward earthquake did occur on the southern segment of the Hayward Fault in the vicinity of today's city of Hayward ( hence, how the fault got its name ).

Still, the events discussed are often based on historical happenings, such as the Seven Years ' War and the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

* 2004 – A 9. 3 magnitude earthquake creates a tsunami causing devastation in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and many other areas around the rim of the Indian Ocean, killing over 230, 000 people including over 1700 on a moving train.

One was recorded in 1812 ; one measuring 7. 6 on the Richter Scale hit on November 30, 1983 at 21: 46 local time and lasted 142 seconds, resulting in a small tsunami which raised wave height in the lagoon to 1. 5 metres ( 5 ft ), and another on December 2, 2002, an earthquake measuring 4. 6 on the Richter Scale struck the island at 12: 21 a. m.

The longest earthquake ruptures on strike-slip faults, like the San Andreas Fault ( 1857, 1906 ), the North Anatolian Fault in Turkey ( 1939 ) and the Denali Fault in Alaska ( 2002 ), are about half to one third as long as the lengths along subducting plate margins, and those along normal faults are even shorter.

The most important parameter controlling the maximum earthquake magnitude on a fault is however not the maximum available length, but the available width because the latter varies by a factor of 20.

The Northridge earthquake was associated with movement on a blind thrust within such a zone.

A tectonic earthquake begins by an initial rupture at a point on the fault surface, a process known as nucleation.

The objective of earthquake engineering is to foresee the impact of earthquakes on buildings and other structures and to design such structures to minimize the risk of damage.

* 1981 – An earthquake registering 6. 7 on the Richter scale hits Athens, killing 16 people and destroying buildings in several towns west of the city.

The Census scheduled for 8 March 2011 was cancelled due to the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

On 27 February 2010, a tsunami caused by the 8. 8 magnitude earthquake off Maule, struck the islands, causing at least 8 deaths.

In the aftermath of the earthquake that occurred off the Chilean coast on 27 February 2010, there were reports of damage and loss of life from a tsunami that hit the island.

In 2001 on the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati's first season hosted by Amitabh Bachchan she won 50, 00, 000 that she donated for the welfare of Gujarat's earthquake victims. The show was aired on February 10 at 8 pm on Star Plus. Madhuri Dixit is also requested to the producers of KBC to send part of her winnings to an orphanage in Pune.

On 10 February 2008, a 6. 5 magnitude earthquake had its epicentre SSE of Bristol Island.

Since becoming independent from Britain in February 1948, the economy of the country has been affected by natural disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and a number of insurrections, such as the 1971, the 1987-89 and the 1983-2009 civil war.

After the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake the Wizard has planned to retire and leave Christchurch for good saying the town he loved had gone and that it was the end of an era.
