Due to its consistency of climate, flora and fauna, geology and land use, " Lower Mainland " is also the name of an ecoregion — a biogeoclimatic region — that comprises the eastern part of the Georgia Depression and extends from Powell River on the Sunshine Coast to Hope at the eastern end of the Fraser Valley.

The Simpson Desert is also a large part of the World Wildlife Fund ecoregion of the same name which consists of the Channel Country and the Simpson Strzelecki Dunefields bioregions of the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia ( IBRA ).

The ecoregion also includes areas of rocky upland and seasonally wet clay and salt pans, particularly Lake Eyre, the centre of one of the largest inland drainage systems in the world, including the Georgina and Diamantina Rivers.

It commonly occurs in association with Quercus douglasii, and " Oak / Foothill Pine vegetation " ( also known as " Oak / Gray Pine vegetation ") is used as a description of a type of habitat characteristic within the California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion in California, providing a sparse overstory above a canopy of the oak woodland.

The flora of this ecoregion also includes tree species such as Gray or foothill pine ( Pinus sabiniana ), Scrub oak ( Quercus dumosa ), California buckeye ( Aesculus californica ), the rare Gowen cypress ( Cupressus goveniana ), the rare Monterey cypress ( Cupressus macrocarpa ), and a wealth of endemic plant species, including the extremely rare San Gabriel Mountain liveforever ( Dudlea densiflora ), Catalina mahogany ( Cercocarpus traskiae ), and the threatened most beautiful jewel-flower ( Streptanthus albidus ssp.

The Vanuatu rain forests are a tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests ecoregion, also known as a tropical rainforest.

The Solomon Islands rain forests are a Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests ecoregion, also known as a tropical rainforest.

The Chagos also form a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Maldives and the Lakshadweep.

Mining for bauxite, overgrazing, and over-collection of plants are also threatening the great biodiversity of this ecoregion.

The rugged southern half of the peninsula, and also the Kodiak Archipelago which lie off the south coast of the peninsula and are home to even more bears, constitute the Alaska Peninsula montane taiga ecoregion and contain a number of protected areas such as Katmai National Park.

The subhumid forests ecoregion also includes the disjunct Analavelona and Isalo massifs to the southwest, surrounded by succulent forests at lower elevations.

The forests of Point Calimere, also known the Vedaranyam forests, are one of the last remnants of the dry evergreen forests that were once typical of the East Deccan dry evergreen forests ecoregion.

The Laurentian Mixed Forest Province, also known as the North Woods, is a forested ecoregion in Canada and the United States.

Fourteen fish species found in the upper Snake are also found in the Bonneville freshwater ecoregion ( which covers the Great Basin portion of Utah ), but not the lower Snake or Columbia rivers.

The ecoregion also borders on the North Western Ghats moist deciduous forests in southeastern Gujarat.

The Semi-arid Pampas, also known as the Dry Pampas, is a temperate grassland ecoregion of central Argentina.

This supports the lush temperate rain forests of the Fiordland temperate forests ecoregion.

The ecoregion supports populations of several important Saharan large mammals including the Dorcas gazelle ( Gazella dorcas ), Barbary sheep ( Ammotragus lervia ) and Cheetah ( Acinonyx jubatus ).

This district lies within the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion and supports mixed forests of pine and oak.

The World Wildlife Fund's ecoregion project catalogues habitat types throughout the world, including habitat loss such as deforestation, showing for example that even in the rich forests of parts of Canada such as the Mid-Continental Canadian forests of the prairie provinces half of the forest cover has been lost or altered.

The Caucasus mountains, which run between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, are a particularly rich mix of coniferous, broadleaf, and mixed forests, and include the temperate rain forests of the Euxine-Colchic deciduous forests ecoregion.

The ecoregion harbors rich biodiversity, with several distinct plant communities, including temperate rain forests, moist inland forests, oak forests and savannas, high elevation forests, and alpine grasslands.

The sandstone plateau area of the ecoregion is a particularly rich centre of biodiversity supporting a unique heathland flora.

Most of its area is part of the temperate rain forest WWF ecoregion, itself part of the larger Pacific temperate rain forest WWF ecoregion, and is remote enough to be home to many species of endangered and rare flora and fauna.

The aquatic fauna in the Gambia River basin is closely associated with that of the Sénégal River basin, and the two are usually combined under a single ecoregion known as the Senegal-Gambia Catchments.

The islands share a common geologic origin in the volcanism of the Réunion hotspot beneath the Mascarene Plateau and form a distinct ecoregion with a unique flora and fauna.

Flora and fauna found in the West Island fall within the broader spectrum of the Eastern Great Lakes lowland forests ecoregion.

Given the Saint Lawrence's heavy traffic and years of mis-use, the ecoregion is negatively effected by high pollution which in turn has resulted in diminished local populations of native fauna.

A diversity of flora and fauna can be found in this mangrove ecoregion including ducks, herons, and woodpeckers as well as iguanas and primates.

Southeast Alaska is a temperate rain forest within the Pacific temperate rain forest zone, as classified by the World Wildlife Fund's ecoregion system, which extends from northern California to Prince William Sound.

The Upper Snake ecoregion is defined as the Snake River watershed above Shoshone Falls, which totally blocks fish migration.

Cape Verde is a group of arid Atlantic islands which are home to a number of birds and reptiles and constitute a unique ecoregion in the World Wildlife Fund classification.

The country is divided into four geographic regions: A lowland belt running north to south behind the coast ( Lower Guinea ), which is part of the Guinean forest-savanna mosaic ecoregion ; the pastoral Fouta Djallon highlands ( Middle Guinea ); the northern savanna ( Upper Guinea ); and a southeastern rain-forest region ( Forest Guinea ).

The flooded grasslands and savannas ecoregion in the south central region of the island surrounds a chain of lakes and lagoons in which the most notable include that of Lake Azuei and Trou Caïman in Haiti and the nearby Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic.

The Shan Hills form, together with the Karen Hills, Dawna Range and Tenasserim Hills, a natural border with Thailand as well as the Kayah-Karen / Tenasserim moist forests ecoregion which is included in the Global 200 list of ecoregions identified by the World Wildlife Fund ( WWF ) as priorities for conservation.

The Bushveld area has been demarcated by the World Wildlife Fund as part of the Angolan Mopane woodlands ecoregion, which extends north across the Cunene River into neighbouring Angola.

The only permanent river that crosses the ecoregion is the Nile River, which originates in central Africa and empties northwards into the Mediterranean Sea.

The southern half of this plateau is grassland within the Eastern Miombo woodlands ecoregion, the majority of which is covered by the huge Selous National Park.

The Georgia Strait – Puget Sound basin is shared between British Columbia and Washington, and the Pacific temperate rain forests ecoregion, which is the largest of the world's temperate rain forest ecozones in the system created by the World Wildlife Fund, stretches along the coast from Alaska to California.

The ' Central Valley Grassland ' is the Nearctic temperate and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands ecoregion which was once a diverse grassland containing areas of desert grassland ( at the southern end ), prairie, savanna, riverside woodland, marsh, several types of seasonal vernal pool, large lakes such as now-dry Tulare Lake, the largest lake in the United States west of the Mississippi, Buena Vista Lake and Kern Lake.

For example there are five terrestrial ecoregion classifications ( subdivisions ) of the temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome (' ecosystem '), which is one of eight terrestrial ecozones of the Earth's surface.

The subalpine ecoregion, which consists mainly of dense forest, comprises 53 % of Banff's area.

Industrial ecology seeks to understand the way in which industrial systems ( for example a factory, an ecoregion, or national or global economy ) interact with the biosphere.

Many ecologists now consider Shreve's Vizcaíno and Magdalena regions, which lie on the western side of the Baja California Peninsula, to be a separate ecoregion, the Baja California desert.

The high mountains of the northern portion of the province are in the Ghorat-Hazarajat alpine meadow ecoregion, which is characterized by meadows, willows, and sea buckthorn.

Further to the northwest near the Koh-i-Baba mountain range, the higher altitudes of the Sulaiman Mountains are in alpine meadow ecoregion, characterized by meadows and willows, as well as blue pines which cover the summits.

Much of the Top End is within the Arnhem Land tropical savanna ecoregion, which to the south merges into the semi-arid mulga scrubland, mallee, and sand dunes of the centre ( see Carpentaria, Kimberly, and Ord Victoria Plain ).

The rainforests of Halmahera, Morotai, the Obi Islands, the Bacan islands and other islands of North Maluku have been described by the World Wildlife Fund as the Halmahera rain forests ecoregion and are home to a number of unique plant and animal species unique to the islands, which are in the Wallacea transition zone containing a mixture of species of Asian and Australasian origin.

Urban areas in this ecoregion ( which does not include Bali, Timor or Sumba ) include: on Lombok the island capital Mataram and the nearby beach resort of Senggigi ; on Sumbawa the port and main town of the east coast, Bima and Sumbawa Besar in the west ; and the ports of Maumere ( the largest town on the island ), Larantuka and Ende on Flores.

Much of the ecoregion was covered by the Patagonian Ice Sheet and other glaciers at the peak of the last ice age, which descended from the Andes mountains, and the numerous lakes of the Chilean lakes district in the central part of the ecoregion were originally glacial valleys, while the southern part of the region has many glacier-carved fjords.
