Little remains of the claustral buildings of the Abbey except for the impressive gatehouse, which stretches between the south-west corner of the church and a defensive tower on the High Street, and the still complete Abbot's House, a building of the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, which is the best-preserved of its type in Scotland.

The outer bailey of Kenilworth Castle is usually entered through Mortimer's Tower, today a modest ruin but originally a Norman stone gatehouse, extended in the late 13th and 16th centuries.

The rest of Kenilworth Castle's interior is divided into three areas: the base court, stretching between Mortimer's Tower and Leicester's gatehouse ; the left-hand court, stretching south-west around the outside of the inner court ; and the right-hand court, to the north-west of the inner court.

Leicester's gatehouse is one of the few parts of the castle to remain intact.

The college's gatehouse, however, is original and is the oldest in Cambridge.

the " Prison Gate ") is a former prison housed in a 15th century gatehouse, with genuine mediaeval dungeons and torture chambers.

It is surrounded by a dry moat which is bridged at the gatehouse.

The walls contain arrow slots, and in the gatehouse is a garderobe.

The gatehouse is crenelated and adorned with the arms of the foundress Lady Margaret Beaufort.

This gatehouse is also known today as Anne Boleyn's gate, after Henry's second wife.

Next to the abbey is the ruin of Dunfermline Palace, also part of the original abbey complex and connected to it via the gatehouse.

The Grade I listed site is now operated by English Heritage as 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, which includes the abbey buildings and ruins, a visitor centre with a film and exhibition about the battle, audio tours of the battlefield site, and the monks ' gatehouse with recovered artefacts.

The remains of the original country house timbers can still be seen within the stone walls of the fortification, while the gatehouse is the only original part of the castle.

But it is also a flashback within a flashback, because the accounts of the witnesses are being retold by a woodcutter and a priest to a ribald commoner as they wait out a rainstorm in a ruined gatehouse.

The southern approach is protected by a long enceinte wall punctuated by two rectangular towers ( the Constable and Egyncleugh towers ), two turrets and a large twin-towered gatehouse at the western corner.

The gatehouse, which apart from the church itself is the only surviving structure of the priory, was built between 1330 and 1340.

The gate tower that forms the entrance is a relatively simple design from the 12th century: the fashion for much grander gatehouse designs began shortly afterwards.

Although the current gatehouse is not Thornton's original, it retains the design and motto, and houses the original decorated gates.

However, several large structures have been revealed through a geophysical survey, including what is possibly the gatehouse to the inner abbey precinct.

The main entrance is through a high gatehouse built at the start of the 15th century.

The sophistication of the gatehouse prompted John Champness, who wrote Lancaster Castle: A Brief History, to remark " it is perhaps the finest of its date and type in England ".

On the other side of the main road, the grade II * listed former abbey gatehouse now forms the Abbey House Museum.

The de Braose dynasty were energetic lords and probably built the core of the gatehouse which now stands besides the keep.

Some of these castles were deliberately built on top of important local buildings, such as the burhs or halls of local nobles, and might be constructed so as to imitate aspects of the previous buildings – such as the gatehouse at Rougemont Castle in Exeter, which closely resembled the previous Anglo-Saxon burh tower – this was probably done to demonstrate to the local population that they now answered to their new Norman rulers.

In 1763, Archbishop Drummond transformed the Palace by building the now familiar ' Strawberry Gothick ' west front and gatehouse.

The church has a magnifcent nave and detached gatehouse. Monks at the Priory made the Tickhill Psalter, one of the finest British illuminated manuscripts of the medieval period, now held in New York Public Library.

The eastern gatehouse now serves as part of the King's High School, a sister institution to Warwick School.

At the centre is the gatehouse itself, which now stands to less than half its original height.

These were flanked by more round towers, of which only traces now remain, and mirrored by further rounds at the rear of the gatehouse.

The gatehouse in the castle's north wall is three storeys high ; now reached by a static bridge, it was originally connected to the barbican by a drawbridge.

Waugh was also responsible for expanding the number of buildings on the island – creating the now ruined village of Maryland ( named after Waugh's wife ), as well as adding a new gatehouse and tower in the Tudor style.

Its facilities ultimately included two large dry docks, a substantial basin ( now used by local anglers ), masting sheers, numerous storehouses, a gatehouse and clockhouse, gun bastions, and, in later years, a large metal-working factory used to produce anchors and other iron items used in shipbuilding.

This was the " Old Jerusalem Tavern ", a now defunct public house occupying what had once been the gatehouse to the ancient Clerkenwell Priory, the mediæval Grand Priory of the Knights Hospitaller, otherwise known as the Knights of Saint John.

Boarstall Tower is a 14th-century moated gatehouse located in Boarstall, Buckinghamshire, England, and now, with its surrounding gardens, a National Trust property.

In 1559 the executors of Sir John Port's will purchased from the Thacker family, for £ 37. 10s (£ 37. 50 ), the land which had once housed a twelfth-century Augustinian Priory, and the accompanying buildings which had survived Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries and subsequent upheavals, namely, the Guest Chamber and Prior's Lodging ( which as the Old Priory currently houses the School Library and Common Room ), Overton's Tower ( now part of School House ), the Tithe Barn, and the Arch, which is all that now remains of the priory's original gatehouse and which helped inspire the School's motto: porta vacat culpa.

Another site on Hill Head is the ( 13th – 14th century ) gatehouse, now belonging to St Illtyd's Church, Llantwit Major.

In January 2009, Cambridge City Council gave the College planning permission to demolish Grove Lodge, Emma Darwin's gatehouse, which now forms part of Murray Edwards College.

In Philadelphia it includes the Benjamin Franklin Parkway known as the Museum District, the arterial roadway of the Roosevelt Boulevard and the Southern Boulevard Parkway built as a connecting median of two urban parks that now also serves as the west roadway entrance of the world class centralized Philadelphia Sports Complex and gatehouse entrance of the Philadelphia Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.

Work has now been completed permanently closing off the thoroughfare that formerly linked Nicholas Street to Colonel By Drive and the adjacent Rideau Canal by building permanent concrete barriers, metal fencing, and a gatehouse equipped with the capability to stop unauthorised vehicles from entering.

The village has a fine medieval church, and a former Cluniac priory, the gatehouse of which is now a private house.

The battery was obsolete by 1912, and sold on, and houses were erected on top, and now the site has an odd appearance with only the curtain wall and ornate crenellated gatehouse surviving.

Of the Norman castle, sited on what is now the keep, little remains except for the 13th-century gatehouse.

The gatehouse is now in the care of the National Trust, and is now in the process of being renovated and restored, this is also being documented by a TV station.
