Species of note in the open enclosures include two subspecies of giraffe, rhinos ( the park has the world's most successful breeding program for Southern white rhinos and is the only New World zoo to have Northern white rhinos ), gaur, vultures, markhor, and many species of antelope, gazelle, and deer.

The wood bison is one of the largest wild species of bovid in the world, surpassed by only the Asian gaur and wild Asian water buffalo.

In Thai, daeng means red, and krating is the reddish-brown bovine called a " gaur ", which is an animal slightly larger than the bison.

The gaur is a strong and massively built species with a high convex ridge on the forehead between the horns, which bends forward, causing a deep hollow in the profile of the upper part of the head.

In colour, the adult male gaur is dark brown, approaching black in very old individuals ; the upper part of the head, from above the eyes to the nape of the neck, is, however, ashy gray, or occasionally dirty white ; the muzzle is pale coloured, and the lower part of the legs are pure white or tan.

The current status of the gaur population is poorly known ; they may be in serious decline.

In January and February, gaur live in small herds of eight to 11 individuals, one of which is a bull.

In some regions in India where human disturbance is minor, the gaur is very timid and shy.

Hence, protection of the historically preferred habitats used by gaur is a significant factor in conservation biology.

The lifespan of a gaur in captivity is up to 30 years.

At 7: 30 pm on 8 January 2001, the first successful birth of a cloned animal that is a member of an endangered species occurred, a gaur named Noah at Trans Ova Genetics in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Wild yaks are among the largest bovids and are second only to the gaur in shoulder height.

Zebu cattle are thought to be derived from Asian aurochs, sometimes regarded as a subspecies, Bos primigenius namadicus Another wild cattle species, the gaur ( Bos gaurus ) may also have contributed to their development.

Other species of cattle domesticated in parts of Asia include yak, gaur, banteng and water buffalo.

Bandipur National Park and Mudumalai National Park, which are sanctuaries for gaur, chital, elephants, tigers, Indian leopards and other threatened species, lie between and to the south.

The commission " conserved the usage of 17 specific names based on wild species, which are pre-dated by or contemporary with those based on domestic forms ", confirming Bos primigenius for the aurochs and Bos gaurus for the gaur.

Two species that naturally co-exist with the gaur are heavier: the Asian elephant and Indian rhinoceros.

With the retraction in range of both species, the natural distribution of gaurs and saltwater crocodiles only seldomly overlaps in recent times ( though domestic gaur may more frequently meet the crocodile ).

Wild gaur graze and browse on a wider variety of plants than any other ungulate species of India, with a preference for the upper portions of plants, such as leaf blades, stems, seeds and flowers of grass species, including kadam.

During a survey in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, 32 species of plants were identified as food for gaur.

The fauna include: the Asian elephant, tiger, leopard, dhole, gaur, boar, and several species of deer.

Noah was the name of species of ox called gaur, cloned and gestated in the womb of a cow named Bessie.

There are 3, 000 species of plants, 320 species of birds like red junglefowl and green peafowl and 66 species of mammals, including Asiatic black bear, Asian elephant, gaur, gibbon, Indian sambar deer, pig-tailed macaque, Indian muntjac, dhole, and wild pig.

The average weights of leopard prey was, and of tiger prey was with a bias towards adult males of chital, sambar and wild pig, and young gaur.

Large mammal species include tiger, leopard, wild boar, muntjac deer, gaur ( Bos gaurus ), chital deer ( Axis axis ), sambar ( Cervus unicolor ), and Rhesus Macaques.

In fact the name means ' liana-horned gaur ' ( a gaur is a species of wild Asian cow ).

The common animals which can be seen are the gaur, sambhars, blue bulls, macaque, langur, wild boar, bears and wild dogs and the Park is well known for its deers and leopards.

Sambar deer, wild pigs, serow, and large bovids such as banteng and juvenile gaur comprise the majority of Indochinese tiger ’ s diet.

There are several other wildlife found in the sanctuary — chital, chinkara, common langur, dhole ( wild dogs ), elephants, gaur, hares, Indian porcupine, nilgai, monkey, mouse deer, leopard, pangolin, panther, sambar ( deer ), sloth bear, wild boar and wolves.

Species found in the sanctuary include bonnet and lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langur, gaur ( or Indian bison ), sambar deer, muntjac ( or barking deer ), Indian Spotted Chevrotain ( or mouse deer ), wild boar, Indian elephant and different species of squirrels, such as the Indian giant and Indian palm squirrels.

Other wild animals found are leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, porcupine, jungle cat, fox, striped hyena, gaur, chowsingha and barking deer.
