Salmon live along the coasts of both the North Atlantic ( the migratory species Salmo salar ) and Pacific Oceans ( half a dozen species of the genus Oncorhynchus ), and have also been introduced into the Great Lakes of North America.

The Isonzo / Soča is also well known for its unique trout species Salmo marmoratus ( known as the marble trout ), which lives in the upper course of the crystal-clear river.

The lake is noted for stocks of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), introduced from Europe and California respectively in the late nineteenth century.

The river is of high biodiversity value and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) maintaining a flagship population of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ), Freshwater pearl mussel ( Margaritifea margaritifera ) and native species such as the Eurasian otter ( Lutra lutra ).

Masrik is of great importance, since its a spawning place for such endemic species as the Gegharkunik trout ( Salmo ishchan gegarkuni ), the Sevan koghak ( Capoeta capoeta sevangi ) and the Sevan beghlu ( Barbus geokschaikus ).

Damavand rivers and slopes are famous for the beautiful Brown Trout ( Salmo trutta ), Red Sheep ( Ovis orientalis ), Wild Goats ( Capra aegagrus ), and many singing native and migratory birds.

From Salmo, Highway 6 goes north for 41 km ( 25 mi ), mostly following the Salmo River, to the city of Nelson, where access to the Whitewater Ski Resort is located.

More recently, DNA studies showed rainbow trout are genetically closer to Pacific salmon ( Onchorhynchus species ) than to brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) or Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ), so the genus was changed.

The river has a good head of wild brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) up to 3 / 4 lb ( 350 g ) and is populated by grayling ( Thymallus thymallus ), indicating the general good condition of the water.

The Towy is nationally known for its run of big sea trout ( local name sewin ), the sea-going form of the brown trout ( Salmo trutta ).

Reports of A. trutta being anadromous and spawning in freshwater are not correct ; this may be due to confusion with sea run specimens of exotic brown trout, ( Salmo trutta ), or anadromous populations of native spotted galaxias, ( Galaxias truttaceus ).

Similar to Lake Baikal or Lake Tanganyika, Lake Ohrid harbors endemic species covering the whole food-chain, from phytoplankton and sestile algae ( 20 species ; e. g., Cyclotella fottii ), over plant species ( 2 species ; e. g., Chara ohridana ), zooplankton ( 5 species ; e. g., Cyclops ochridanus ), cyprinid fish ( 8 species ; e. g., Pachychilon pictus ), to predatory fish ( two trout species ; the Ohrid trout complex Salmo letnica, and " Belvica " Acantholingua ohridana ) and finally its diverse endemic bottom fauna ( 176 species ; e. g. Ochridagammarus solidus ), with particularly large endemism among crustaceans, molluscs, sponges and planarians.

The presence of beaver dams has also been shown to either increase the number of fish, their size, or both, in a study of brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ), rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) and brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) in Sagehen Creek, which flows into the Little Truckee River at an altitude of 5, 800 feet in the northern Sierra Nevada.

Richardson named a specimen of this species Salmo gairdneri in 1836, and in 1855, W. P. Gibbons found a population and named it Salmo iridia, later corrected to Salmo irideus, these names faded, however, once it was determined that Walbaum's type description was conspecific and therefore had precedence ( see e. g. Behnke, 1966 ).

The Atlantic salmon and trout of genus Salmo give the family and order their names.

Many fish ( including pike and carp of considerable weights ) are taken in the lake, which is especially famous for an endemic kind of trout ( Salmo salvelinus, locally called Rolheli ).

The Lake Constance trout ( Salmo trutta ) was almost extinct in the 1980s due to pollution, but thanks to protective measures has made a significant return.

It includes both purely freshwater populations, referred to Salmo trutta morpha fario and S. trutta morpha lacustris, and anadromous forms known as the sea trout, S. trutta morpha trutta.

Only 11 native fish species are known from the lake, but 9 of these are endemic: Alburnoides prespensis, Alburnus belvica, Barbus prespensis, Chondrostoma prespense, Cobitis meridionalis, Pelasgus prespensis, Rutilus prespensis, Salmo peristericus and Squalius prespensis.
