The Galveston-Houston Electric Railway began operating an interurban between those cities on December 5, 1911, and last ran on October 31, 1936, though the Houston Electric Company, operator of Houston's city transit system, continued to run trains on the portion between downtown and Park Place.

In 2009, the conversion of G sets to T sets began, to improve their suitability for suburban working as OSCAR sets continued to replace their interurban duties.

The passenger railroad reorganized in 1937 as the Illinois Terminal Railroad ( ITR ) and continued to provide electric-powered interurban, long-distance multiple car passenger train service Peoria / Danville to St. Louis for almost another two decades.

Beginning on March 11, 1905, the interurban began operating over the Metropolitan's " L " tracks, allowing AE & C trains to directly serve downtown Chicago.

Some trams ( for instance tram-trains ) may also run on ordinary railway tracks, a tramway may be upgraded to a light rail or a rapid transit line, two urban tramways may be united to an interurban, etc.

In 1942 the interurban tracks were threatened when the government scoured the country for surplus metal to supply war needs, but citizens protested that the electric railroad was vital to local people and saved great amounts of gasoline.

The Ferrocarril de Sóller (, " Sóller Railway ") or FS is an interurban railway and the name for the company which operates the electrified gauge tracks running between the towns of Sóller and Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca ( stopping at various smaller towns such as Bunyola and Son Sardina ).

Being adjacent to moving road traffic, sometimes coming in the facing direction, the speed of an interrban couldn't get much past 45 miles per hour, if that, and there was always the danger of hitting autos suddenly crossing the tracks just ahead of the oncoming interurban.

The Vans designated Shaker Boulevard as a grand boulevard of mansions, fronted by generous setbacks from the interurban tracks.

Michigan City is a major stop along the South Shore Line, one of the last interurban rail lines in the U. S. The train runs directly through on 11th Street ( it has no separate right-of-way, and shares the street with automobiles and other road traffic ), making two stops in Michigan City's downtown area ( 11th Street and Carroll Avenue ).

In the early 20th century an interurban line passed through this area linking the cities of New Orleans and Kenner, aligned along the present course of Jefferson Highway.

Because St. Vincent's mental hospital was located just north of St. Charles Rock Road, a streetcar line was constructed in the late 1800s from just south of Olive Street Road in University City north on the east side of Ferguson Avenue through what is now Pagedale to meet the electric interurban line to Saint Charles at the Rock Road.

Electric interurban service connecting Troutdale with Gresham began in 1907, operated by the Portland Railway, Light and Power Company and connecting in Gresham with interurban service through to Portland.

The Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle ( Harmony Line ) interurban railway previously ran through Bradford Woods, where Forest Road is today.

The company was bought by the Philadelphia Company in 1906, later becoming part of the Pittsburgh Railway Company, linking through to Pittsburgh as part of their interurban service in 1909.

This electric interurban line ran from Fairmont through Rivesville to the Rivesville Power Station, just north of town.

An interurban trolley line was constructed through the town with a terminus at the Hampton Terrace, dubbed the Augusta – Aiken Railway and Electric Corporation and later extended to Aiken.
