The westernmost islands of the archipelago ( Corvo and Flores ) are located in the North American Plate, while the remaining islands are located within the boundary that divides the Eurasian and African Plates.

It is likely that the name referred to the two islands of Corvo and Flores, which also appeared on the later Spanish Mapa Catalão of 1375.

A later Mapa Catalão, from Spain, referred to two islands of Corvo and Flores in 1375.

Fernão Telles, who owned the islands between 1475 and 1503, was the first to attempt to colonize Corvo ( contracting the Flemish entrepreneur Willem van der Haegen ), but abandoned his settlement after a couple of years.
