During 1867 – 1868 Dana was a member of the Massachusetts legislature and also served as a U. S. counsel in the trial of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

However, in 1985, this veritable political dynasty ( termed the Big Blue Machine by observers ) came to an end when the minority government of Davis ' successor, Frank Miller, was defeated in the legislature by an alliance between the Liberal Party of David Peterson and the left-wing New Democratic Party ( NDP ) of Bob Rae after the PCs won a plurality but not a majority of seats in the provincial election.

After his return from the war, Varina Davis did not immediately return with her husband to Washington when the Mississippi legislature appointed him to fill a Senate seat.

As there was no serious consideration of a Liberal-NDP alliance after both campaigns, Davis was able avoid defeat in the legislature by appealing to other parties for support on particular initiatives.

Davis was also present for Tory's first session in the Ontario legislature, following the latter's victory in a 2005 by-election.

Jennings was at that time an election candidate against an enemy of Harrison, Davis Floyd, for the clerkship of the territorial legislature.

Davis appointed Lawrence as his Attorney-General but, in 1972, Lawrence resigned his seat in the Ontario legislature in order to enter federal politics.

He used his position in the legislature to become a thorn in the side of the Tory governments led by John Robarts and Bill Davis.
