Regional transport in Belgium is operated by regional companies: De Lijn in Flanders operates the Kusttram and the Antwerp pre-metro as well as a bus network, TEC in Wallonia operates the Charleroi pre-metro as well as a bus network and MIVB / STIB in the Brussels Capital-Region operates the Brussels metro as well as the Brussels tram and bus network.

To some US observers these networks may appear to operate as commuter / metro hybrids, however, they are simply the result of full utilisation of the available track capacity in the core of the suburban rail network, this being fed from multiple feeder lines.

This is particularly so in Sydney and Melbourne, where headways on many lines in the core of the network reach 3 – 5 minutes in peaks and 10 – 20 minutes off peak ( about 18 hours a day ) and enter an underground loop for passenger distribution in the city centre ; and where ridership per capita exceeds the sum of metro and commuter rail in comparable North American urban areas such as Toronto, Boston or the San Francisco Bay Area.

The MTR operates the metro network within inner urban Hong Kong, Kowloon Peninsula and northern part of Hong Kong Island with newly developed areas, Tsuen Wan, Tseung Kwan O, Tung Chung, Hong Kong Disneyland, the Hong Kong International Airport, the northeastern and northwestern parts of the New Territories.

An international mainline railway the Gulf Railway and a four line metro network is proposed.

The Kuwait Metropolitan Rapid Transit System Project is a planned four-line metro network which will total 160 km with 69 stations.

Stockholm previously had a large tram network, but this was discontinued in favour of bus and metro ; a revival of the tram network was seen in the construction of Tvärbanan in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Shanghai Metro is the longest metro network in the world

Local transport is based primarily on an extensive bus network ( 38 different lines ) and a metro line that was inaugurated in March 2002 and cost € 500 million to build.

The State of Finland has announced plans to support Espoo with 30 % of full expenses on a new metro rail, the Regional Council of Southwest Finland is going to use this as a test case for a new light rail network in Turku.

Orlyval is a small automatic metro which runs a shuttle service to Paris's Orly Airport from the RER network, with which it connects at Antony station on line RER B.

There is also a metro station Diemen Zuid next to the train station that connects to the metro network of the GVB.

Each has a metro station on Rotterdam Metro line D ( Poortugaal station and Rhoon station ), which connects in eastern direction to Rotterdam and to the main railway network at Rotterdam Centraal railway station, and in western direction to Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse.

There is also bus connection with the Stockholm metro as well as an extensive internal bus network.

The city centre near the south of the island is surrounded by satellite towns, parks, reservoirs and industrial estates, which are connected to the centre and each other by a dense network of roads, expressways and metro railway lines dubbed MRT by locals.

In the Netherlands, ProRail is a government task organisation that takes care of maintenance and extensions of the national railway network infrastructure ( not the metro or tram ), of allocating rail capacity, and of traffic control.

Most commuter ( or suburban ) trains are built to main line rail standards, differing from light rail or rapid transit ( metro rail ) systems by:

Compared to rapid transit ( or metro rail ), commuter / suburban rail has lower frequency, following a schedule rather than fixed intervals, and fewer stations spaced further apart.

However, the classification as a metro or rapid rail can be difficult as both may typically cover a metropolitan area exclusively, run on separate tracks in the centre, and often feature purpose-built rolling stock.

Therefore there are now a huge variety of different styles and types of map-for example, one area which has evolved a specific and recognisable variation are those used by public transport organisations to guide passengers, namely urban rail and metro maps, many of which are loosely based on 45 degree angles as originally perfected by Harry Beck and George Dow.

The Docklands Light Railway ( the DLR ) is an automated light metro or light rail system opened in 1987 to serve the redeveloped Docklands area of London.

The Helsinki area has three urban rail systems: a tramway, a metro, and a commuter rail system.

There are also plans for a light rail system operating between Amman and Zarqa and a funicular and metro line in Amman.

It also plans to build a metro rail in the future.

It is the second largest metro system in the world in terms of route miles, after the Shanghai Metro and part of the largest system in terms of route miles when taken together with the Docklands Light Railway. Tours does not have a metro rail system ; instead there is a bus service, the main central stop being Jean Jaures, which is next to the Hôtel de Ville, and rue Nationale, the high street of Tours.
