In 1909, Henry Clay Frick, a steel magnate, bought the present-day Iron Rail property so that his daughter Helen could create a vacation home for the mill girls throughout New England.

The history of the Turnback Mill begins in 1848 when William Likens, Sr. came to Turnback Creek and built a water mill at the point where the two branches of the stream flow together.

Light industry of a sort came to Humphreys in 1882 with the establishment of the Humphreys Milling Company, a steam-powered flour mill located in a large three-story building.

Solomon Taylor, who came from Schodack about 1791, operated a saw mill in town.

Industries came to town in the late 1890s beginning with Norwood Manufacturing Company, a cotton mill which built the town's first mill and mill village.
