Alan Cameron, however, argues that it should be interpreted as referring to Plato, and that when Proclus writes that " we must bear in mind concerning this whole feat of the Athenians, that it is neither a mere myth nor unadorned history, although some take it as history and others as myth ", he is treating " Crantor's view as mere personal opinion, nothing more ; in fact he first quotes and then dismisses it as representing one of the two unacceptable extremes ".

The romance tradition did, however, remain sufficiently powerful to persuade Thomas Hardy, Laurence Binyon and John Masefield to compose Arthurian plays, and T. S. Eliot alludes to the Arthur myth ( but not Arthur ) in his poem The Waste Land, which mentions the Fisher King.

( It is, however, suggested, that this is an urban myth.

In all literary versions, however, the myth is a kind of theodicy, addressing the question of why there is evil in the world.

The Hesiodic myth did not, however, completely obliterate the memory of the all-giving goddess Pandora.

Occasionally, however, some users and dealers could have, believing this myth, used real embalming fluid mixed with, or in place of, PCP.

The binding of baby Oedipus ' ankles, however, is unique ; it can thus be argued that the ankle-binding was inelegantly grafted onto the Oedipus myth simply to explain his new name.

In this version of the myth, however, Argia, Polynices's wife, persuades her husband to give the necklace to Eriphyle so that Amphiaraus will join the war effort.

Her father put her in charge of the labyrinth where sacrifices were made as part of reparations ( either to Poseidon or to Athena, depending on the version of the myth ); however, she would later help Theseus in overcoming the Minotaur and saving the would-be sacrificial victims.

The belief in the eternal antimilitarist spirit, present in all places and time, is however a myth because the modern military as an institution is a historic achievement formed during the 18th and 19th centuries, as a by-product of the modern nation-states.

Often, however, it is the war-like fury of the rain deity that receives emphasis ( as is also the case in the myth mentioned above ).

Whatever the psychological truth in the Oedipus myth, an Oedipus who is drawn to his fate by irresistible external forces can carry the symbol of humanity and its archaic crime, and the incest that is unknowing renews the mystery of the eternal dream of childhood and absorbs us in the secret.

There is probably some significance in the fact that two of the best incest stories I have encountered in recent years are burlesques of the incest myth.

Mann understood better than most men the incest comedy at the center of the myth and the psychological truth in which dread is shown as the other face as longing was for him just the kind of deep and complicated joke he liked to tell.

Prometheus Bound, perhaps the most famous treatment of the myth to be found among the Greek tragedies, is traditionally attributed to the 5th-century BC Greek tragedian Aeschylus.

" is simply a true myth: a myth working on us in the same way as the others, but with this tremendous difference that it really happened: and one must be content to accept it in the same way, remembering that it is God's myth where the others are men's myths: i. e. the Pagan stories are God expressing Himself through the minds of poets, using such images as He found there, while Christianity is God expressing Himself through what we call real things.
