In the 2007 / 08 season, he reached two quarter-finals: in the Grand Prix ( losing 5 – 3 to Gerard Greene ) and the Welsh Open ( with victories over John Parrott 5 – 2, Peter Ebdon 5 – 1 and Stuart Bingham 5 – 2 before Shaun Murphy beat him 5 – 0 ), as well as the last 16 of the UK Championship, where he beat Neil Robertson 9 – 6 after being 5 – 3 down, before losing 9 – 2 to Marco Fu.

It was at the Finals where Perry had his best run in a ranking event during the 2011 / 2012 season as he beat Fergal O ' Brien and Graeme Dott, before being defeated by Neil Robertson 1 – 4 in the quarter-finals.

Dott's best run of the season came at the World Open, where he beat Barry Hawkins and Marcus Campbell, before losing 1 – 5 to Stephen Lee in the quarter-finals.

Fu whitewashed Stephen Lee 5 – 0 in the second round and beat Ronnie O ' Sullivan 5 – 3 in the quarter-finals, before losing his semi-final 6 – 4 to Stephen Hendry, who went on to win the title.

Italy beat the French, on the final day, to finish on four points and joining the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

In the second round, he beat Simon Greul 6 – 4, 6 – 2, and in the quarter-finals, he defeated Björn Phau 6 – 2, 7 – 5.

In the quarter-finals Hungary beat Brazil 4-2.

He beat Mark King 6 – 3 in the first round and Ryan Day 6 – 1 in the quarter-finals, but lost 3 – 6 in the semi-finals against Mark Selby.

Maguire therefore went into the World Championship in very good form and his passage into the semi-finals was largely trouble free as he beat seventeen year old Luca Brecel 10 – 5 in the first round, Joe Perry 13 – 7 in the second and Stephen Hendry 13 – 2 in the quarter-finals, with a session to spare.
